Modified Dynaco ST-70

My baby, with the original nickel chassis! And the transformer bells, rust-o-leum semi gloss black, the beez kneez for transformers. Gloss is too shiny, and takes some good can control to make even and pretty. This unit was trashed when I got it.

This one has the old school japaneese output trannys, upgraded power transformer, the tubes4hifi VTA board, low gain, and upgraded can cap. Original sockets and the tubes that were in it when I got it. RCA fatboys. I also replaced all the wiring underneath.

I've never seen one up for sale either but I did luck in to one.

I had posted in a thread over at the Klipsch forum about wanting to buy one of the VTA ST-120s at some point. A couple of day later I got an email from a guy that had one in a "B" system that never got any use. He offered it to me at a really really good price so I bit.

What arrived last Thursday was a VTA ST-120 built by Bob Latino. It has 3 NOS Mullard CV4024 driver tubes a Sovtech rectifier and a matched quad of Valve Art KT-88s. According to the PO all under 20 hours. Not even broken in yet

I had an email conversation with Mr. Latino about this amp and yes he built it and it's about a year and a half old. The original buyer did opt for the power supply cap upgrade but I guess the Russian PIO coupling caps weren't available at the time.

I've ordered one of the Weber Copper Cap SS rectifiers (per BL's suggestion) and the PIO caps from BL. I'll be ordering a set of Genelex Gold Lion KT88s as soon as the Christmas spending frenzy passes.

Of course the obvious question is how does it sound? Answer... VERY VERY good. It's driving a pair of completely rebuilt Klipsch La Scalas. I'm now anxious to get the upgrades in place so it'll be the very BEST it can be.

Not bad for $700 delivered Oh yea... I'll be posting pictures of it in a couple of days

cool, so id say your a happy customer of will's. i have herd nothing but great to excellent things about all of his amps. i think iam sold and will get one built for shure and may have to do 2.

I would inquire about the Hovland caps sooner than later if you are interested. Will didn't think he was going to be able to get them for much longer as I don't think Hovland is making them anymore.

I started off building a VTA board version around a
Dynaco chassis got off ebay. I wanted to go all-toroid,
and ordered a ST70 transformer set made by Trafomatic
from Boris Sasic of Vista Audio. Unfortunately, the
Trafomatics were too large for the ST70 chassis, so I
got a local workshop to make another chassis.
The tubes are JJ KT77s, and my speakers are single-driver Sachiko horns
using Fostex FE206E drivers.

So eventually, I ended up using the ST70 to house a
point-to-point wired 6B4G SET amp, with
Trancendar OPTs and a Antek PT. The circuit is the same
as Shannon's Get*Set*Go amp.

They are both excellent sounding amps and I
am glad at how the amps turned out.

i have George Washington's original axe that he used to chop down that cherry tree. the head has been replaced with a new depleted uranium one, and the handle is a fiberglass replacement with sorbothane grips.

VTA-Mod-ST70 w/EH6CA7. I can't really which of my ST-70 i like best, but this I like a lot. New feet, new RCAs, new Speaker-connectors, Power supply, Caps. I'll put up some pic with some light on it later.
