Modifying a Barzilay console/cabinet?

My 11 month old son is irresistibly drawn to my home made flexirack. So I'm exploring options that a) don't show pretty blinky lights, and b) have a reasonable WAF. I've been looking at vintage stereo consoles, and came across a nice Barzilay with matching speaker cabinets.

I'm wondering whether anyone has had success modifying a cabinet such as this one that is designed to access equipment from the top into something with shelves so that equipment can be accessed from the front. The cabinet already has doors, as you can see. It a shelf issue. I can do some woodworking, but would like to use as much of the existing structure as possible. Any suggestions or experiences are much appreciated.

Get the Barzilay now. You can figure out your options when you have it in your possession. Mine is a little different than yours. You can see in one of the pics that I have a Denon DVD player in the left side compartment. It was like that when I got it and I had to do no modification. I prefer the heavier pieces on top and a turntable, amp/tuner, and power amp will fit on top. You can store vinyl or cds in the bottom sections. Good luck. The Barzilay will be with you forever...Classy :yes: I don't have any suggestions for childlproofing.
