Mono 2 Track

Only 4 channel machines allow all 4 tracks to be recorded at the same time. Your Teac allows two channels at a time use. Since it records in two directions.

Amateur decks were always NAB in Europe too, as one can easily check in the manuals of the decks.

The differences are not lesser. There are no differences at all, because CCIR was never defined for speeds lower than 19 cm/s! so that any slower speed uses NAB, for the simple reason that there is no other EQ standard for those speeds.

I doubt they allways followed NAB :)

Several european decks was aligned per DIN 45 513 - decks like Philips N4450

Hard to locate, but DIN 45513 is described here (unfortunately for many only in German language)

Ahhh, that's interesting, thanks for pointing out that exception Jan. That DIN 45513 standard is interesting in its covering practically the whole range of consumer and professional speeds. At 19 cm/s and up it matches the CCIR curves, while at 4.75 and 9.5 it matches... nothing, in any case not NAB.

I don't have many details on that standard but apparently it existed between 1965 and 1982 at least. If a pre-recorded tape using a non-NAB eq. actually existed, it might be DIN 45513 then. But make sure it says so on the cover: prerecorded tapes often sound lousy, not because they follow an exotic standard, but just because they were poorly made.

Incidentally, since it was mentioned in the other thread on this topic, I checked that the Uher 4000 is not one of the exceptions: it follows the NAB eq. curve.

Hi, Yes, I know, only records two tracks at a time, I thought I explained that I worked that out ? nevermind. So, to confirm, again, record tracks 1 and 3, when done on that side then flip tape to record tracks 2 and 4 ? is that right ? Last remaining question, how does the teac know which tracks have been used when recording this way ? same question for playback as well. Do you press the record off/on, left and right buttons ?

Hi, Okay, so which positions for which tracks ? for example, track one would be ? and so on, for all 4, as I have no idea, and what about for playback ? or, there is no concern for that ?! only for record ?!

It's just for record. You need a means to play one track summed to mono. Many can't do that without patch cord changes and Y adapters. McIntosh vintage owners can easily play one channel isolated through both speakers. I do this for rechanneled tracks on recordings with true Stereo content.

Hi, Okay, but I'am now only asking about recording, not playback, I have got that part, so, my original and only question now is this, what positions do those record buttons have to be in for which tracks ? Thanks. Groovetube.

When recording on the "A" side of a tape :
track 1 : Left channel
track 3 : Right channel

When recording on the "B" side of a tape : (tape flipped)
track 4 : Left channel
track 2 : Right channel
