Hi all and merry xmas,
I'm sure this has geen discussed b4 but can help me understand what mono recording on a record is, I've heard its all vand instuments recorded at once, where in stereo they record all instuments separately then put them together for final piece, ? Am i in the right ballpark ?, why are they more desirable.
Thx

Unless we're talking about really old single-mic recordings, mono and stereo are (generally) created from the same source recordings. Stereo is mixed down to two channels to create the stereo effect, mono is mixed down to a single channel. In some, but not all, cases before about 1968, there were very different mixes created for the mono and stereo releases. The stereo releases were left to assistants and without a lot of oversight, leading 1969 and later (generally), the few mono discs that were created, mostly for radio stations, were just fold-downs of the stereo mix.
