I have a HK Citation 17 preamp paired with a Hafler XL280 w/ Musical Concepts PA-200 dual mono power supply mod. The XL280 is rated at 145 wpc at 8ohms. The amp is powering four speakers via the HK "special connecting cable". The cable connects to the speaker outs on the amp and routes it back through the preamp, which splits it into four channels. See attached pic from the HK owner's manual, which suggests a maximum of 300wpc running back through the preamp.
I think it sounds great. I have no complaints and feel like I'm only using a fraction of the power at regular listening levels, even when powering four speakers. However, I was offered another XL280 which has me wondering about a monoblock set up. I'm confused about how to calculate the load or whether it's possible or advisable to do this. What do you think?
