Monoprice 8323 headphones- Wow!

Well I just received my 8323's today. Shipping was quite quick too. I have to say Im very impressed with the overall feel, look and the sound. I have it temporarily connected to a Mac but tomorrow I will take them downstairs and have a proper listen through the GF DAC 11. Unbelievable value for the price. :thmbsp:

I'm tempted, but I hope I learned my lesson with speakers. I have two nice headphones and if these are not equal to or better why buy them. I did buy the 8320 IEM but they rarely get used because I have better. I use them for mowing the lawn. I'm trying to be selective. The Fischer headphones are calling to me however. I just need someone to tell me they're better than what I have.

Totally agree cubdog. The only reason I really bought them in the first place was the price. From Cali to Toronto it was 29 bucks. I rarely use headphones to begin with. Im the same with speakers too. I have been using a mint pair of Paradigm Titan v6s that I love and for some reason I decided that I want to try the 7se's. I don't have a ton of speakers like most here and had a hard time justifying even spending what I will on them.

I need another pr of phones. I was ready to pull the trigger on the Monoprice, but figured I'd do some more reading. I have some Sony V600, but I loaned them to a friend. I'm enjoying the T-50, but I would like one for upstairs and one for downstairs. I'm trying to avoid getting a big stable of cans so I did more research.

Looking at the 8323, JVC 900 and Panasonic HT 600 - they seem to be standouts in the < $50 range. There's also the Superlux 668b which uses the same driver as Samson 850, which are just a hair more. It's tough to find tests/graphs on all these phones, but I think they can help. Anyway these reviews got me to try the HTF600

They cost $29._ at Amazon w/free shipping. It looks like they can be modified somewhat, but the 8323 probably can be too. I'm not saying they're better, I just thought I'd give them a try. I really wanted to post testing resource that might help get a handle on what to expect.

This one helped me immensely. I also use the one at Headroom. I like that you can superimpose the graphs there. The bass response looks different between the two and square waves are at slightly different frequencys. Reviews are tough for phones. Fit, feel, seal, taste/preference varies so much it's hard to figure it out. Hope this helps.

The 8320's IEM are a dud. The cable and plug are very nice, but that is where it ended for me. Good thing they were only $3.

Just got mine and I agree. They're big, heavy and all midrange. I've heard plenty of $5.00 Chinese earbuds that sound similar and are more comfortable. Nothing special here, although there are worse out there. IMO, all they have going for them is a decent balance. The bass doesn't overpower the highs or vice-versa, but there's little in the way of either. My budget favorite is still my midnight shift Sennheiser CX55 from dealextreme.com for $11.70 shipped. Worlds better. Unfortunately sold out right now, but the site says temporarily and they may be restocked.

I don't mind the sound of the Monoprice but man they are uncomfortable. I don't know why they made them so big.

My only complaint with thee otherwise surprising bargains. Jim

I was probably a bit hasty... They just sound so different than the earbuds I was using... it took a while to adjust. They're definitely lacking a bit in the bass and highs, but there is a very nice balance and clarity there. I can see why people like them. My "Sennheisers" are significantly better, IMO, but those were another lucky find (and cost about $3.00 more... lol). The Monoprce 8320 do sound better than what you generally get for the price. I prefer them over my Skullcandy Titans which have punchy bass, but dull highs and a poor overall balance.

Not comfortable though..

I bought the 8323s about a month ago. These are my first headphones in a really long time so I can't really make any comparisons. But I do think they sound very good. The next major upgrade to my system that I still need to make is better speakers. I plan to do this once we move into a bigger apartment after New Years. In the meantime my Fisher DS-810s are ok most of the time but with certain recordings they just can't handle the bass, it distorts. Case in point I was just listening to a Russian Heavy Metal LP that I just got in the mail [see new avatar:D]. A crude recording that was horribly distorted over my Fishers. The LP is so good though that I flipped it over again to side 1, pulled out the 8323s and let'r rip all over again. There was no distortion whatsoever through the 8323s. In this tiny apartment I needed headphones for overnight listening when I'm off as not to bother my wife. I'm very satisfied with these 8323s.

I've been eyeing these for a while, but I'm not seeing that price... is there a promo code?

What would you guys say is the balance of these headphones? Are they mostly bass? Or do they have some mids and highs?

My pair of 8323's arrived today (purchased at the sale price of $17.40)... unfortunately they were DOA. There was no sound from the driver in the right cup--tested with both cords. I twisted the cable around in the jack a bit and managed to get severely distorted audio.

[Edit: Based on reviews for the seemingly identical Kicker HP541 on Amazon.com, it seems the right ear cup has a tendency to lose it's connection to the signal (which enters at the left ear cup). It seems to be related to the internal connection at the sliding adjusters in the headband.]

I have requested a replacement pair (I like what I heard from the left driver). I'll be sure to let you guys know about my experience with customer service!

[Edit: Emails from Monoprice's returns department have been helpful, timely, and friendly (although it seems that English may not be their native language). They sent me a UPS Ground label to print, so the exchange won't cost me a thing. They also had the foresight to warn me that the headphones were out of stock (probably a result of the sale) and that it might take a few weeks to fill the replacement order. I've sent my defective headphones back, and am eagerly awaiting a functional pair of which I can share my impressions.]

I also received the 8320 IEMs today. I don't like in-ear headphones, but I couldn't resist having Monoprice throw a pair in the box along with the 8323s. They fit my ears perfectly, unlike similar models I have tried. I agree with the multitudes of positive reviews across the interwebs on these, they are a very good buy for seven bucks and change.
