Monster Speaker !!!

Bozak Symphony's

These Symphony's are in custom cabinets, twice as deep as original. A bit over 16 cubic feet, infinite baffle design, bigger the better. All of the bass is real, no ports. I guess almost 200 pounds each. The only plastic is on the internal wires and spring clips. Eight 2 inch aluminum cone tweeters, one 6 inch aluminum cone midrange and two wool and paper coned woofers. The woofer cones are about a quarter inch thick in the middle and taper to the outer edge, variable density it is called. The magnet on the mids is the same size as the woofer. Stereophile magazine measured the efficiency at 91 db at 2.83 volts at 1 meter. Overall rated at about 80 watts. More efficient than many bookshelf speakers. End of sales pitch.

They're D-12s from George Sioles' Design Acoustics "D" or "Design" series of speakers from 1973. Dodecahedral cabinets designed for stand mounting or to be hung from the ceiling, nine 2" Peerless cone tweeters, one 5" sealed back Peerless midrange, and one 10" CTS woofer with the twelfth panel being a port. This particular set is the rarest color option of electric blue on black painted walnut, the most common being regular oiled walnut veneer with black grills followed by black cabinets with orange grills (as featured in an episode of The Brady Bunch) with the avocado green grills model just before the blue.

They have been my bane in audio for how I've been the target of a great deal of humor regarding my blue balls.

INCREDIBLE !!! :drunk::drunk::drunk:

I wonder If I should replace my magnavox bookshelf speakers with lightweight floorstanders? or just put the drivers from the bookshelf speakers inside the soundesign floorstanders?

I did not know that there was so many of us AKer's with such monster beasts !!!! ------ GUYS ---- Your speakers ROCK !!! ----

Well speakerlust, right now, no monsters, but here is a paint drawing of the project speakers I am building. Right now, I have all the drivers, crossovers, l-pads, and what-nots, but I haven't built the cabinets yet.

They won't be monsters, but they'll have a good amount of bass. :)

Here is also a pic of my earlier dual l-100 system, and a pic of my Model 14s(which are pretty big).

Those are both some AWESOME setups !!! ------ I started this thread feeling kind of proud of my speaker ... I'm both humbled and proud that my
AK friends have such incredible equipment !!!

Thanks, they are alot of fun for listening to acousitc music, they also have raised a few eyebrows of visitors even before they are turned on. I added a super tweeter after the pictures were taken which fills in the last little bit of top end.

I can't even imagine supertweeters added to that setup !!! ......
Got to be one of the best anywhere ???

Probably not the best anywhere. But definitely more then adequate for my needs, holds its own against a lot of store bought speakers significantly more expensive. Probably the longest resident speaker in my set-up that I have built over the past 15 - 20 years. I am content ........ for now.

The quad boxes on the bottom are unreal...........output/efficiency/low distortion/slam are still top notch. There's not much that comes close.........
Low Frequency: Four 2226H 380mm (15in) dia., 100mm (4in) edgewound ribbon voice coil
One 5504 LF enclosure with DiamondQuad driver array
Nominal Impedance: Each pair in parallel; two 4 Ohm loads per driver pair
Input Power Rating: 2400W, AES; two channels of 1200W Recommended Amplifier per driver pair
Sensitivity: 103dB, 1W @ 1 m (3.3 ft)

It is incredible to me that you have this setup in your house !!! It has got to be rock concert loud !!! ....

MJKING, welcome. i saw those when i was researching on OB's. i read your entire thread. VERY nice. i would love to hear those.

Gotta love a 18" driver, it just plain looks intimidating for its size.

The white rectangles are 6' tall, the big speakers just inside were just over 4' tall and pretty hefty, the blue balls are 2' diameter, while the beige things towards the center hide 15" dual-concentric drivers which look impressive on their own, but they're no 18" driver:

The Planars, roughly 5' tall each and 2' and over in width:

Lousy pic of the recent speaker addition (before modifications), the little speakers are 5' tall by 22" wide while the big room dividers are 6' tall and 4' wide:

Not much that can be 'monster' in weight, but they qualify in size.

How do you like those Tympanis?
