Monster Truck accident...

Well, horrible news from a different part of the Netherlands than I live.
Apparently, there was a monster truck show in the city of Haaksbergen, which had a very, very big accident. The monster truck, during the show, drove straight into the audience. 3 People have been reported to have passed away, with two of those individuals being children, and the number of people injured at this point is 60.

That's terrible. I wonder what happened though as the driver seems like he's still revving after going over the cars.
 
I believe the drivers of those rigs often just THINK they are in control of them...In reality, they're more or less "Just along for the Ride..."
 
Lost the steering linkage maybe?

Evidently this is just about 1 year since a monster truck incident in Mexico killed 8.
 
What a tragedy. The venue was not optimum for that sort of demonstration at all.

A stuck throttle possible, these big cammed and supercharged motors usually have to idle a bit higher in general I think.
There is usually a remote control kill switch the crew can hit if the truck is in trouble or the driver ko'd..maybee not in use here?
Very tragic my heart goes out the familys.
 
I've watched other venues like this on youtube that are held in the Netherlands.

Spectator safety doesn't seem to be a high priority in most I've seen.
 
I truly hope that other people learn from this to make future venues like this safer. The fences indeed are not helping in protection, a monster truck can easily run through it and a person can easily climb over it. It reminds me of the time when there was the national WWII memorial and an idiot starting yelling, and before that an attempted assassination on the royal family with a car, aimed to hit the bus they were in (it failed, the driver hit a statue and died). Both times the fences did nothing to help. The people fell over the fences in the first example, in the second example the car drove through the fences and injured people really horridly, the stories of the people that got hit were gruesome.
 
Sounds like a stuck throttle to me. So sorry this had to happen. The people were way too close.
 
Would this be a part of the world where rally fans stand in the road until the last possible moment before the speeding car hits them? I've seen that quite often in videos of European road rallys.
 
where was the tripple redundant(3 people with remotes) shut off with some sort of servo or air brakes ?

I remember that one. I was completely shocked then. :sigh:
 
umm... that is sad.. but good lord who let them run those trucks in that space.... I wouldn't have been any place near the fences personally. There has to be some criminal negligence somewhere in the planning / approving of this venue / event.


appallingly dangerous set up.
