at440mla-the cure for the the common turntable
hi, this is my first post on audiokarma. I've found that when i got back into vinyl, there were many different alignments, tools and manufacturers specified settings.... Ive spent entire days researching chat forums on here and vinylengine. I bought the mirrored protractor and used the conradhoffman arc protractor and had good results but sacrificed hours and straining my eyes from constantly looking down a cantilever on a grid. I own a pioneer pl-560, i bought at a record show for $75 and two records to go with it. Everything on it is original and works fine. It had an old shure M912ed cart with the original hi-track stylus. Put a new stylus right away and had the most awesome warm tone ever...to also include the dreaded inner grove distortion. I set the tracking force to 1.25, used all three types of arc protractor and tried the pioneer recommended settings of 49mm stylus to headshell distance... still had IGD but some records were better than others. Enter the at440mla. I measured 49mm and checked it with the stevenson protractor on vinylengine (for which i laminated it to help not destroy the stylus). IGD gone!! not only that but made my old flea market records sound like CD's almost. Everclear's sparkle and fade album and creed's human clay had atrocious amount of IGD all over the whole record, the 440mla cleaned it up completely. i'm considering getting an At lp120usb, cause my pioneer is 36yrs old and dont know how long its gonna hang in there, but def gonna put a 440mla on it right off the bat.
