Most compatible LOMC's with the Linn Basik LVX tonearm?

Hello gentleman, I recently purchased an Onkyo Integra P-306RS pre-amp for it's LOMC cartridge capability in order to try out the MC sound I've read so much about. I'm soliciting opinions as to which are the best LOMC cart matches with the Linn Basik LVX tonearm.

Linn recommended against low-compliance moving coils, such as their Asak design, with the LVX arm because it simply didn't have the rigidity or bearing quality to handle the energy level that such a cartridge transmits to the tonearm (the Basik Plus, having dropped the removable headshell design, was a bit better). Many of Ortofon's moderately-priced moving coil cartridges have somewhat higher compliance ratings (14 to 16 μm/mN) and might not overtax the arm. For moving coil cartridges, budget arms from Rega such as the RB301 and RB700 are going to be more versatile and perform better than the LVX, so I'd consider an arm upgrade before spending much on a LOMC cartridge. I've owned the LVX, Basik Plus, and Ittok LVII and LVIII/2 arms, and thought the LVX worked best with a modest moving magnet design, but something like the Ortofon Samba might make an interesting experiment for not too much outlay.

I used an MC10 Super on my Basik LVX as well for many years and it worked quite well I thought. The cantilever was damaged a couple of years ago and I haven't found another LOMC that has the compliance to work well with it as yet. The MC 10 Super has a considerably lower tracking weight than the usual MC cart, generally indicative of greater compliance. I'd grab another if I could find it.

The AT-OC9 MLII fits the bill, Bill. So does the Ortofon Samba. Both have require a median tracking force of 1.5g making them a good match compliance-wise.

The Orto is a bit cheaper at 285, is that still a ways out of your budget?

Yes it is, I was hoping to find something compatible for less than $175.00 to get my feet wet.

Thats gonna be a hard to get a LOMC for that price. You might want to prowel eb*y or Audiogon for one that needs to be retipped and send it out to the soundsmith. Might be able to get one that way for just over 200 if your lucky. Or stay on the lookout for a Denon Dl-207, which is a LOMC version of the Dl-160. What are you currently running for a cartridge?

I'm running an Ortofon OM body with the Digitrac 200 NE stylus. It look as if the AT and Ortofon Samba are the only two high compliance LOMC's currently available. I think I see an Ortofon Samba in my near future. :yes:
