Motor problems Akai CR-81D

Just traded for this 8 track deck and noticed that the motor only starts to turn about an 1/8 of a revolution and then stops and kind of just vibrates. Checked the rotation with the belt off and the spindle seems to rotate freely by hand, so I dont think it's a lubrication/bearing issue, but not sure.

Maybe needs a recap? If so what am I looking at for a novice repairman such as myself? Or maybe it's just a bad motor, maybe can be rebuilt by a local repair shop?

I've heard really good things about this unit and it's in pretty good cosmetic shape, so I would love to get her going.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

That's a big AC motor. I own the same unit, and AFAIK motor problems with these are rare. If I had to guess I'd say you've got a bad motor run cap.

Thanks 1tumbleweed! It is a BIG ac motor, right? I was hoping maybe it was something like that I might be able to tackle! I will download that service manual and check it out...

Hi Trent,

I just got the same AKai off of ebay. It's awesome. Great cosmetic shape and all functions work, but having the same issues with the motor you were having. It doesn't spin, just vibrates. Please let me know what you did to get it running! I'm a novice on repairs and am getting more comfortable handling, but doing a recap...I don't even know where to begin. Thanks!

Replace the relay driver transistor 2SC968 on the relay pc board.
