Motorcycle Riding - less safe today?

I was just driving home from Dallas on I-35, and I saw a motorcycle coming up behind me. There was plenty of room for him to pass me in the left lane, but instead, he passed me between my lane and the left lane, and then cut across my lane only a few feet in front of me. It was enough to startle me even though I knew he was going to pass me. If I had drifted just a couple of feet to the left he would probably be dead right now since I doubt his baseball cap would have helped him much.

When the weather was nice, I used to commute to work on my old Yamaha Seca.....137 mile round trip.
One late afternoon riding west on I-70, a swarm of Sport Bikes passed me going, easily, over 100 mph.
About 3 minutes later a Maryland State trooper pulls up behind me with lights and sirens, then pulls me over.
I was NOT speeding, so this kinda confused me?
He asked me if I had seen a pack of speeding motorcycles, and WHICH WAY they were going???
Without saying a word, I just pointed straight down the highway.
He nodded, got back into his cruiser, and headed west, lights and sirens blaring in pursuit............waaaaay strange!!??
