Moved and uncovered my old system

I just moved to Knoxville and in the process I unpacked my stereo setup from back in the 70's. I still have my Marantz turntable 6200 and my AV receiver Akai AA-V205. I don't know what happened to the speakers, etc. but i still have about a hundred of my old jazz and early rock vinyls. I hooked up a couple of cheap speakers to see if i had any sound. The receiver works fine but the turntable suffers from a serious hum. I don't have any experience to speak of but i sure would like to be able to listen to my Nancy Wilson, Buffalo Springfield, Jimi Hendrix, etc. Any tips on how or where (Knoxville, TN) i might be able to get this baby working?

First thing I would do is check all connections by unplugging them one at a time and see if the hum goes away. It sounds like there may be a ground problem. Make sure you've connected the ground wire for the turntable to the appropriate spot on your receiver. Check speaker connections at either end (speakers and receiver) to make sure there are no stray wires touching each other.

Also, check the wires on the tone arm. Second, unscrew the headshell on the arm. Check for corrosion on the connections between the arm and headshell ( the part that holds the phono cartridge). Welcome to AK.

As Homebrew states above, the problem is most likely the absence of a good ground between your turntable and receiver. Look for a ground post on the back of your receiver usually found adjacent to the phono RCA jacks and attach your TT ground wire there.
