Unfortunately I think I am moving away from vintage. Not really voluntarily but the fact that most of the "Vintage" stuff I do own is very valuable anyway. But Being that most smaller vintage receivers would over work themselves and possibly blow out powering 88Db speakers is one reason. I was really trying to find a nice 80's receiver or integrated but seince such a search would be in vain I decided maybe I am missing out buy crossing off newer and 1990's gear.

I realld did want to have a seperate 80's-90's A/V setup with all 80's and 90's video and audio components and such, but i decided my HTIB is enough for movies and the 1980's 90's cassette decks Eq's and receivers were good enough for my 2-channel rig. I highly doubt any of my vintage receivers would drive the new speakers I own without blowing the dome tweeters seince they are only 15 watts per-channel.

Maybe someday I'll come across one of the early 1990-1985 AVR's and use one of those but, I just can't exclude new gearbecause I have a pre-conceived notion of Overheating receivers, Empty cases, Loss of warmth,Cracking faceplates buttons that get pressed in and, the way modern stuff looks.

I will have to say that a lot of receiver's looks havent changed much seince the 8o's

Right now in my setup there is.

Kenwood 103AR -1999
JVC KDV-22 cassette -1985
Realistic EQ-1980
Sharp CDP-1991
KLH TNE-1980?

Sony speakers-2008

And soon to be a tuntable-

Sony STR-AV1070. 120 or so wpc, ton of inputs, everything you'd ever need.

Cheap, too.....

Most vintage receivers and any that I've owned will easily drive 88db sensitive speakers without breaking a sweat...don't understand your concerns.

if you're moving to newer amplification,go no further than the 1990 PIONEER VSX-D1S. it is one of the most well made "BPC era" receivers one could ever hope to find and it can drive just about anything, too.:music:

Ray

Put me on that list and Ray, I'd really like to have an autograph on it, I'll trade for a mint I ran into Tammie Faye at the mall t-shirt, which is worth like a zillion $$$$ I'd be proud to wear it and answer all questions!!

So your saying that the superscope and masterwork receivers will drive the speakers pretty good?

If so then the superscope is going back on the rack 88Db is only 3Db less than 90Db when I think about it.

I didnt say I was going into BPC or nothing although a more powerful receiver like the kenwood wakes the speakers up more but I was going by the speaker manual which states

"Low watt amplifiers and receivers may introduce distortion which may BLOW the dome tweeter"

How about getting a DECENT vintage receiver-Pioneer SX-780 is a very good choice here, same with an Onkyo TX-4500mk1- for very low bucks and seeing what vintage can REALLY do?

I am saying that what you have to compare with modern junk is old is junk, and before buying BPC (although not all black stuff is BPC), look at what is out there. I can assure you that you will be amazed at the sound that you get.

Most of the bottom of the line stuff you've been collecting won't even drive Miss daisy...Stuff that will drive nearly everything = I'm talkin' about low end Sansui, Kenwood, Pioneer, Yamaha, Marantz and all of the others I left off here. No a 5 watt per channel Superscope (who's power ratings were probably pumped up even then) won't power a good set of any speakers...sell the bottom feeders and buy a Sansui 6060...feel the power man!!!!!!

I'd love to have an onkyo or a mid-powered marantz.

I did see a monster sansui at a pawn shop but it did not work, me and the owner had a half hour conversation about how cool vintage audio was. :music: :D

I wouldn't say the superscope isn't a decent receiver seince its basicly a marantz 2220B with a differnt oriented/shaped tuning knob and a different back panel orientation, the amplifier section faceplate and tuning scale are exacly the same almost.

I really don't think the 1990's kenwood 103AR is really BPC, It sounds not too different than the superscope just with more reserve power to the speakers .
