Moving up from a Shure V15T3

Good for you and sticking to your guns and buying a cart. that you feel good about and fits into your budget. No disrespect to anyone here. There is a wealth of good knowledge here. But sometimes a man has to go with their own gut feelings. Imagine if he went with someone else's recommendation and didn't like it.....

Which if he wishes to do, the stock tonearm which is excellent can easily be upgraded by getting an arm board made. Most any 9" tonearm will fit it. Basically this was the SP-25's servoed father.

If you say its better than the SL-1200 I'll take your word for it.
I find even a Thoren TD-160 to have more 3D sound, and that's not very high end table.
I wish my table was tighter and more dynamic.

The Shire V15T3 came with the turntable. Before I even got a chance to try it I broke the stylus so I bought the VN35E for $15. It actually sounds quite good. My reason for wanting a new cartridge was because I was hoping new ones eliminate or lessen the sibilance and I also just want have more than one....being the audiophile addict that I am.

If you want to eliminate sibilance you have to improve tracking....

So you need to look at:
Cartridge/Needle to Arm matching
Needle tracking ability (driven by a combination of cantilever/mass and fineness of side radius)

Although the Jico SAS is an excellent upgrade for the V15III (better than the originals!) - it is still a high compliance setup.

The SL1100 is not a low mass arm - and is therefore not ideal for a high compliance cartridge. That combo is likely to be sensitive to footfall, feedback, and other vibration issues due to the low frequency resonance.
(If the arm is replaced with something else then we need to look at what arm is fitted etc...)

I would look for a mid compliance cartridge perhaps AT95, or something from the Nagaoka MP series - look for something with a VTF between 1.7g and 2.5g...

bye for now

David

I ordered the cartridge on the. 7th. Figured I should get a tracking number. Nothing. Tried to log in to see my order history. They said my order didn't exist. I called today. They said they are on back order for the shipment. Then they said they had gotten a whole bunch of orders for that cartridge and it might be sometime in August that I would get it or they might find out they cannot get the cartridge for the old price which would mean they would sell it to me after a price adjustment... Damn!

My EVG V15 TYPE III should be here tomorrow according to tracking info from E-pay. I can't wait to compare it to my original NOS. I also had a JICO SAS that got damaged when it got caught on my felt mat. I am tempted to by another from LPGear.

Ok i got my EVG today. And i must say for 15 bucks its sounds damn good!! i am playing it now.. i think i might buy another

Can someone take a few photos of their V15T3's from a few different angles? I'm asking because mine doesn't have a nameplate on the front. It does say the name of the cartridge on the bottom though. It just doesn't look like the ones I've seen on the web.

Thanks...Blake

I humbly disagree with this. I have V15 III that was my dad's; an original purchase in 1976. It came with an Elliptical stylus. Because Shure no longer supports this cartridge I bought a NOS MR Shure stylus and A Jico SAS. The original MR is a clear winner. I think the SAS is more akin to the original HE Shure stylus. Anyway, the MR stylus was a huge upgrade in sound and was 125.00 dollars well spent a few years ago. They are tough to find but worth the money if you love the V15 III.
