Mozilla Firefox Hangs

Hope someone there has some insight.

I run Windows 7 with Microsoft Security Essentials. For the last 3 weeks or so, I've noticed that Firefox (my preferred browser) hangs at various points when I'm browsing. By "hangs" I mean that the cursor stops moving, the circular moving icon appears and I can't do anything for a minute or so. This happens every five minutes or so.

If I left click on the screen while this happens (as in trying to navigate to another site), the screen will go to half tone but eventually comes back. Control/Alt/Delete will also eventually kill the hang.

It doesn't seem to do this when I browse with Explorer.

This morning, I uninstalled Firefox and reinstalled it but kept my personal data and customizations but still am experiencing the problem.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

disable any add ons then install them back one by one ..o found firefox was getting slower and slower so i moved to google chrome

Thanks for the suggestions botrytis and petehall347!.

I'll try to completely uninstall and report back.

I've had a lot of issues with this in the newer versions of Firefox. In the cases where it's not a plugin problem, forcing the cache size to 0mb (effectively disabling caching) seems to fix it.

It seems that uninstalling the entire version without saving the "personal data and customizations" solved my problem. I haven't had a single "hang" since.

I just did all of that and will see if anything changes but I'm starting to like chrome better.

Try Opera; I gave up on FF and never cared for Chrome. Opera is faster than any other browser I've tried and does not seem to have any downsize. Most recently I picked up a netbook and IE would not conform to the screen size. Installed Opera and the problem was taken care of.
