What did these things cost? $2-$4 back in the day?

No need to drown your sorrow. As mentioned they are just highly selected of the standard run. There are/used to be several tube dealers that would follow a similar procedure and rate their tubes for low noise, matched sections, etc. These would be a much more wise investment since those vintage 10M tubes are of unknown running time.

Gotta respect someone's desire for great sound when they decide to burn up several hundred dollars of tubes in their preamp instead of selling them.

Pretty much what I'd do with something like that got a receiver I wouldn't mind tossing high quality tubes in. Beats selling them to someone that'll waste them in a guitar amp like a lot of other really high quality 12ax7s.

It's not a waste if it's giving you the tone that you're looking for as a player.
