Mullard Tube (valve) Making Video

Register to hide this ad
Just finished watching this - absolutely fascinating. I couldn't help wondering where all that manufacturing equipment wound up? China?

China?

Thanks guys. I thought it would be pretty cool to share with you people here. I too wondered where all the equipment went. It could have been recycled. Shame to see all that stuff be trashed. The buildings alone and the work force was amazing. A bit boring at the start, but it soon got interesting in a hurry when they did the plant tour.

I will have to invest in some Mullard tubes. That video made me want to own some.

Very good video. Could you imagine being the part of the army of persons maintaining that mechanical equipment? The volumes of manuals that must have been used and the training and such. It's staggering! :thmbsp:

Mullard made Philips and Amperex?

Somebody told me that Mullard made Philips and Amperex tubes for them?

Any truth to this?

Where are they?

Are there any tube plants still operating in Western Europe? I don't think that any plants exist in the US or Canada.

Anyone know? Just curious.

Sylvania

George, I don't know how long you've lived here but in the 60's there was a Sylvania plant in Shawnee. My Aunt used to work there and made vacuum tubes!!

Best regards.

Genalex

Did the Genalex Gold Lion producers get the Mullard equipment? My brother in law seems certain that they did. He claims that the Genalex Gold Lion tubes are reissue mullards.

Mullard

Your Welcome

I just picked up some Mullard tubes on line. Waiting for them now. Can't wait to try them out. They are strait from Blackburn.

Maybe I didn't see it,but there's know mention of the branding of the tube. What they used and why they made it so it would rub off easily.

from what i gathered there is another facility that the tubes were sent to in which they were labeled and individually boxed for resale

Tube paint.

I don't know what they used, but I have read that the apparent reason for the easy rub off was so that used tubes could not be sold as new tubes. Makes sense. They were afraid of retailers reselling used tubes as new.

More Mullards

Just picked up a quad set of 40KG6A - PL509 Mullard tubes. Wow! Nice tubes. I think I will go back and watch the video again!

Where did the Mullard tooling/machinery go?

I believe some of the tooling went to Japan back in the 70's as Mullard began to wind down production. I have read that a few times from various publications and websites. I also heard that there was a heroic plan to re-start tube production in Blackburn a few years ago but that fell through and the rest of the machinery and tooling were sold off. I think that was reported in AudioXpress a year or two ago (?). Wouldn't surprise me if Mike Matthews (of EH, Sovtek, etc. fame) bought some of it for his Russian factory.

Mullard New Production

Who is making the Mullard New Production tubes? Where? Anyone know?
