Murderous Bozaks

You're welcome. I just looked inside mine and I did bypass the 25uf cap with a PIO. I will try a 25uf oil cap and post the result.

For those of you who have "Tobinized" your Bozaks( highly recommended) one additonal mod will further listening pleasure. Move tweeters to ear level:music: Opens the soundstage and imaging greatly. Happy listening!:banana:
 
Thanks. The cabinets have a decent walnut veneer and were easy to strip. The grill frames are plain old wood and painting was easiest.

I changed the 25uf caps in the xovers to Sprague motor run oilers and like the result. Sounds more natural than the Dayton caps. As usual, YMMV.

Tensleep's speakers have the tweeters in the corners at top of the cabinet. I will do that when I re-wire them internally.

The 302-A's are great speakers and with a little work, the Pat Tobin xover mods mainly, can be immensely improved. They retailed for $800 in 1965, a good chunk 'o change back then.

Les, those Urbans look fantastic! I have a spare pair of crossovers. I may need to rebuild them with the Spragues and come up with a quick-change terminal strip to facilitate changing out the crossovers. Thanks for posting the pictures.
 
Thanks. For $25 shipped the Spragues are worth a shot. :thmbsp:

I'm driving them with the restored Marantz 2230 I got on fleabay for $250 shipped. The seller is a retired Superscope/Marantz tech and seems to have done a great job. The Dual 1219 will be sent to AK'er 'notransistors' to be refreshed.

I really have to get my CR-1020 refreshed. The big Kenwood power amp sounds great, but the CR tuner/preamp is also getting flaky.
 
Yes, do get it refeshed. You will be stunned. I had a CR840 for years and my journey through audio hell started when it died. I really liked it and would like to hear the Bozaks with a Yammy of that vintage. The loudness contour was really nice. I will start looking for Yammy soon.

I'm am gonna go out on a limb and just say try the Spragues. Duke Ellington's 'Blues in Orbit' just sounds so :music: right now. The Bozak drivers are excellent but the stock xovers keep their light under a bushel.

The Sprague caps have settled in and are staying put. *I* like them much better than the Daytons. I may rewire internally and move the tweeters down the road but for now all is well.
 
The Murderous Bozaks have really opened up. I am truly enjoying these speakers as my main stereo system at the moment. I am powering them with a thrift store Yamaha RX-V690. My sources are a Denon DVD-2200 optical drive, part of a bulk purchase from a fellow enthusiast and a Kenwood KD-5066, loaded with an Audio Technica AT92E cartridge. I rescued the turntable from an electronics recycler, along with an HK330C and a Denon DP-45F. The Bozaks in Barzilay furniture were purchased from the original owners, a couple who had assembled the furniture and speakers themselves.

I have been working on this system for about three years total and must say, I am very pleased with the progress. I may fool around with biamplification at some point, but right now, this stereo sounds and looks fantastic. The last few things that I need to do - reenforce the cabinets, hang the curtains for the backwaves and possibly reline the cabinets, and get my CR-1020 refurbished.

Even so, this system sounds just fine as is.
 
I think relining them with that cotton batting will do more than extra bracing/ reinforcement. I am going to do that soon.

The Musical Fidelity A-1 amp I PM'ed you about will be here Tuesday. I am curious to hear them with a 'modern' amp. They very sound good with the refreshed Marantz 2230 but I believe that these drivers can give a lot more. Wiil post after it arrives.

I can say that speaker wire does make a difference and it is not subtle.

I am still wondering if using a ribbon tweeter in place of the 200Y's will move them further up the food chain. :scratch2:
 
The amp arrived and dayam the speakers are really alive. 36 class A watts is plenty...unless you live in a cathedral. If you can borrow a 'modern' amp sometime...just do it. I think you will be very surprised.

I am going to leave them as is and just reline the interior.
 
Yup, I intend to purchase some new amplification in the next 24-36 months. That will be a happy day! Congratulations on your new amp and even more on your satisfaction with your system. That is really cool!
 
This is overkill, but the Yamaha receiver that I am using to drive my Murderous Bozaks has a sub woofer output. I have a very nice looking, old M&K sub woofer that was in the queue for some work, as it was acting flaky. I sanded and treated the veneer with Howard's Restore a Finish and Feed 'n Wax. Then, the volume pot and RCA jacks were treated with Deoxit and Fader Lube for the pot. Using rope caulk, I resealed the plate amp to the back of the cabinet and installed the plate with new hex head cap screws. The speaker tended to hum and oscillate before. Now, she works just fine. However, the last thing these Bozaks really need is bass reinforcement. I must admit, though, that the sub really does compliment the Bozaks. I have the sub woofer crossed over at 50 Hz. I'll find a better spot for the M&K at some point, but for know, I will just enjoy.

I hear you on the sub...Not really needed but when used ads another dynamic to the lower end. It's optional,some like it,some don't.I just use it when I feel I'm in the mood ;) .
 
Listening to the Murderous Bozaks. I am driving them with a Yamaha RX-V995, sourced by a Denon DVD-2200.

They are slaying Ben Harper and Relentless 7, White Lies for Dark Times.
