music hall mmf 2.2 dust cover tightness.

Hey folks,

I have a Music Hall MMF 2.2. Love the way it plays and sounds, but I've always had issues with the hinges on the dustcover being exceptionally tight. It makes it difficult to open the lid. Sometimes it just gets stuck and I have to hold the plinth while I open with my other hand. I'm afraid one day the plastic piece on the back will snap. I've attached a photo to illustrate the pieces I'm speaking of.

I've tried loosening as well as tightening the four screws (two each hinge) on the back but that doesn't seem to solve the problem. This seems like it should be the most basic thing to troubleshoot, but it's been ongoing for as long as I've had the table.

Any ideas on how to solve it?

Basically it's a bad design. I've messed with those too and it's hard to find the right balance in screw tightness vs position of the hinges, which can be tweaked slightly when the screws are loose. You could try a bit of light oil on the metal to plastic interface. TriFlow might be a good one.
 
Ugh, I feared that might be the problem. Don't the Pro-Ject Debut etc. models have the same style? I had one of those and never had this issue.

I have tried some graphite lube and it did help a little. I figured since it was a powder it might be less likely to eat away at the plastic.

Funny how most oils come in plastic bottles. ;) Tri-Flow certainly does.
 
If you look on the black hinge right in the middle, there is a screw. Is that so the chrome piece wont slide out or what? I can check out mine later.

My Project assuredly has the problem. If the screws aren't very tight it is too lose. And with the screws tight, have to hold plinth to open cover. I might get the EAT model that comes without a dust cover.
 
The hinges on My Pro-Ject operate fine, but removing the cover during playback is best anyway. I just lift mine straight up & off for listening sessions. Definite sound improvement.
