Music While Reading?

Sometimes listening to the right music while reading adds to the experience. This is further enhanced when the "sound-track" matches the story being read. My usual choices for reading are instrumental only, as vocals tend to be distracting.

While I enjoy many genres of music, especially "good" blues & rock, they don't rock my boat when reading - too distracting. Classical, jazz, or some "modern" & electronic/new-age usually works for me. Last night, for example, I was reading a most intriguing thriller that even Steven King said would scare the **** out of you, and NPR had really creepy electronica playing. It was a perfect match.

Do you like combining the two pursuits and what do you listen too?

Can’t do it. Any noise while I’m reading and I will be distracted from the text. Quite room or earplugs if I’m in a noisy environment like when I’m at work if I want to read.

I have problems paying attention to people talking to me if a tv or a radio is on in the room so reading requires silence.
 
Try some genres of ambient, chill, trance, and maybe some industrial too. They are riddled with pure instrumentals and I find that conducive to understanding heavy technical texts.
 
If i want to understand what i'm reading I need silence, or a cacophony of sound ( like the airport ). One extreme or the other.
 
Having background while reading is conditional for me. TV/radio and music with vocals, and some types of music are too distracting. OTOH, the right instrumentals, at a lower level, do enhance the reading experience. Having the "right" music is the key and it is limited.

As a teen, music was blaring from whatever system, or radio, I had when doing homework. I graduated with OK grades but doubt that the music kept me from acing everything.
 
Music during reading? In order for this to work for me, it needs to walk the fine line between boring and involving; too boring and a mental subtext of “Jeez, this song is REALLY crappy…” runs through my mind; too involving and it pulls me from concentrating on the text.

Possible, but tough for me!
 
I can only do one thing at a time. Background music is OK while doing most things that don't require comprehension but I'm not really listening.
 
Light Classical or smooth Jazz is fine for me and preferred. Although Early Morning Quiet with coffee is my first choice!

When I was young I could sing along and read at the same time. Those days are long gone. Now I need quiet to be able to read.
