Just picked up a sealed Toots and the Maytals 180 gram. The man was a Reggae inspiration to Bob Marley and Jimmy Cliff, he does John Denver covers, he's the Godfather of Ska IMO. If you have Rhapsody look up his version of Stings Walking on the Moon, it's incredible!

Have you listened to Burning Spear? I like his Heartbeat labels the best. Also he's really the best live in person. Toots and the Maytals are great too. Just addin my .02.

Cheers,
Bob

Love toots!

I just started listening to toots and the maytals this summer and I LOVE everything I've heard so far.

I'll have to check out Burning Spear too.

Sounds like you're just starting down a beautiful road. Here are more recommendations by my favorites:
  • Lee Perry, specifically "The Scientist" collection of dub records
  • anything with Sly & Robbie, but most known with Black Uhuru (also played bass & drums on Bob Dylan's "Infidels"
  • Augustus Pablo--kind of like "new age" (sort-of) Reggae
  • Aswad
  • and though it's more ska than Reggae, the "King Kong Compilation" which is the work produced by the legendary Leslie Kong--one of the greatest producers and influencers of Rock Steady, Ska and finally Reggae

You might also look into Gregory Isaacs and Ken Boothe--different eras but they were the equivalent of Otis Redding or Wilson Pickett: crooning over the best bands in existence in their genres at the time.
