Musty smelling turntable???

I dunno, I've tossed plenty of sneakers and other shoes that weren't leather into the dryer before without the soles melting. :dunno: maybe try it in a coin op dryer. Not your own.

I heard vinegar too but then I read vinegar breaks down the rubber. I think my next move if the baking soda doesn’t work is wait for a hot day next summer and lay it out in the sun all day. I know sunlight takes a smell out of a lot of things, so maybe it’ll work on this. Thanks all for the suggestions. I’ll keep trying And keep posting Updates. Right now I’m just happy that I get to keep the table. :)

I`ve had very good results over the yrs; if allowed time, by using the baking soda thinly spread out ~1/8th" in depth over a saucer, aluminum pie plate, or dinner plate for greater absorption exposure area to the baking soda over the yrs. when addressing the removal of musty/mold smells.
I would place the a large as possible shallow saucer(s), etc. with baking soda as described above on the platter mat and close the lid for about a week, and then check again for any residual mold smells.

I’m using a large plastic wash pan and covering it with cardboard. I’ll give it a week. View attachment 3058134
Very good, but for best results, use a large plastic yard bag covering it to help seal out any humidity in the area that you placing it, unless it will be in a relatively dry low humidity climate controlled environment.

Cardboard absorbs moisture and will reduce the baking soda`s mold smell removal effectiveness, as the baking soda will start absorbing any moisture that it`s exposed to, desired, or otherwise.

In the 1980's, the PBS network series Nova had an episode about fungi called "The Rotten World Around Us". I thought it interesting enough to record it on VHS when rebroadcast.

One example shown of where mold was found to grow was on a glass camera lens.
There is one also thats kind of like goo. It moves along as a colony from meal to meal. I don't want to me that next meal. :yikes:

I recently picked up a gorgeous Denon DP-60L turntable, but whoever had it before me must had stored it in a damp basement or garage and it smells pretty musty. I cleaned and wiped everything down and I have been placing rags soaked with Frebreze on in a cup under the dustcover, alternating with rags soaked in Oust. It has helped a lot, but I know when I bring it in the house, my wife is going to give me all kinds of hell if she smells it, and SHE WILL!
Is there any great things or ideas out there to take this smell away? I was thinking maybe putting it in a plastic garbage bag with a bag of rice for a week? Or maybe Damp rid? I'm open to suggestions and I'll try anything.
Thanks in advance!!!

Damp basement/High Humidity = Mold, Mildew, Fungus, etc. All are 'alive'.

* You 'Do Not' want that contaminating your record collection. *
That's opening up a huge can of worms. It is a concern!

Good luck.

Yeah I have no idea where this was stored before I traded for it. Luckily I did figure out it was just the mat and it’s nowhere near anything else right now. The records are all safe. . The rest of the table has no smell since I used Ozium and cleaned it inside out.
