MX-1 had a great fall.

I recently picked up a MX-1 for "parts/repair". . The speaker switches were pushed in from the pictures and the description said it did not power up. I've always been an optimist. It showed up nicely packaged.

I pulled the cover off. It looked very clean and there was no obvious damage. I pulled the front face off. The speaker switches were pushed in and the metal bracket tabs were was bent. No bid deal to put the switches back and bend the metal back in place.

The power switch assembly circuit board was cracked in half. I super glued it back into one piece, cleaned some of the covering off the traces and put in a few solder bridges. It metered ok.

I plugged the amp in and it powered up on a DBT with no surprises. But the protection relays did not pull in. I checked and I had good 70vdc from the power supply to the amp boards. I didn't check any of the other voltages on the power supply. I checked the bias on the emitter resistors per the manual. Some were around 3.6mv. But several were at 0.0mv on the left and on the right. So I looked at things a little closer. I noticed one of the emitter resistors pins had been pushed through the PCB and pulled the trace off. Wow, what sort of fall could cause that? So I pulled the heat sink out to take a better look at the back side. That is when I noticed this:

That took some effort to crush the board that much. But if you look closely the fuse is still in the socket on both sides to the amp still powered up! It's like it wants to live again. Here is sort of what I expected to find on the left side:

That actually looks repairable. Just some jumpers or solder bridge over to the little pins by the "c217" on the PCB. Just enough so it can handle the current. Obviously I have a pile of transistors that will need replacing. I saw another thread that had recommended replacements. I'll have to see if they are still good part numbers. But I pulled the right PCB and I could not see anything wrong with it. I did not pull the transistors but there were no shorts or opens that I could identify. Resistances all looked similar. Then I saw some blackened ribbon cables under the main capacitor board. So I pulled that board out:

BLEWEY! Was this thing powered up when it fell? The manual does not have a PCB diagram for this board. I think I am going to need one. Anyone got a diagram? Or does anyone have a replacement board? There are not a lot of components on this board in this area. Just a bunch of grounds, jumpers and plugs. I'm thinking I could probably find enough copper traces to rebuild this. But also see that at least one big pin is pushed through in the upper right. It might look better once I clean off the blackness.

Yamaha went to a lot of effort to get the grounding right. I love the star ground component. Am I going to mess it up putting in jumpers and such? I am thinking that I had 0.0 bias on the right amp board because it was not getting any power from this blowout. Does that seem possible?

So what do you think? Can all the kings horses and all the kings men put this back together again? If these are the only problems that exist, I think it is possible but I'd sure like to get a new power supply board.

I don't need another boat anchor. . .

Lots of battle damage. Did the chassis get tweeked as well?
 
With the power switch broken someone would have had to hotwire it to power it up. If I wanted to CSI this thing I'm thinking that maybe it blew up first then someone dropped it. Or someone shipped it with poor packaging. The chassis looks great. Maybe a little bending on the back plate by the speaker connections and the broken line voltage power board. But that massive bottom plate can probably take several G's before it bends.

I've got $300 into it. So I could put a few hundred more in before I started cringing. My time is free. Just trying to keep my mind working until spring gets to Minnesota. I have a CX-1 already and it's been hooked to a MX-830 which is nice but they are not a matching set.

I have to compliment Yamaha on how well designed the interior is. I pulled everything apart without even getting a solder sucker out. It's not as pretty as my AU-X1 but much easier to work on.
 
I've been distracted. But now I have cleaned up the power supply board and it does not look as bad as I might have thought. There are 3 traces that are vaporized. It appears that I can replace them with some wire leads and get that working again. That is step 1.

I started searching for replacement semiconductors. I'm not much good at selecting replacement transistors/diodes. And I'd like to replace with original if at all possible. Searching for these original part numbers often sent be to foreign lands and epray :(. Neither option will help me sleep at night. Is there a handy website for finding modern replacements? How will I know that they are up to the original standards (or better)?

Can someone fill in the blanks below with Mouser (or similar) links? This data is pulled from the manual. Some Q's are duplicate part numbers. Can anyone fill me in on what the OPY, OR, GRBL codes mean?

I'm thinking about replacing all of the transistors on the left side. I hooked a transistor tester up to some components and nothing read like it should. Yes, I know they have to be out of the circuit to get good readings but most of the components on the right side read as transistors at least.

I'll probably order enough parts to replace all the outputs so that I end up with a balanced system in the end unless I can find original part numbers. Or am I being a perfectionist? I don't have a lot of experience with how one transistor compares to another when it comes to audible output.

The codes were after the transistor part numbers in the MX-1 manual. But HFE ranking codes sounds more interesting. . .

I put the order in for enough parts to replace all the output transistors on both heat sinks. Just barely qualified for free shipping!:thumbsup: I'll start with the melted board and if I have parts left over I can move to the other side.

I'm going to put wire jumpers to bypass the vaporized traces on the power supply board now. I'll turn it on with a DBT (60watts?) and no heat sinks installed to see if that gets power where it is needed. And if I am lucky the safety relays will pull in.
 
Well, this is not good. Please note that I pulled this board out BEFORE I powered up my repaired capacitor board. So this was existing. I just never pulled this board off before.

So what should I add to my order short of "everything on this board"? :dunno:

Here is a picture of my jumpers on the capacitor board. I did go back and add a solder jumper between my wire at the top and the wire coming through the PCB. Even though that wire appears to be jumping to and from the same solder trace. Is this a single layer PCB? Other than looking cool does the 8 point copper piece server any purpose?

Oh, the service manual that I have from HFE for the MX1 is missing the PCB layouts for this board (Vamp) and for the capacitor/power supply board. Does anyone have a link to a more complete manual?

So far it seems that the "protection" board has only protected itsself. And maybe any speakers that were hooked up when this blew which I guess is its job?

So I decided to be a big boy and look up some of the parts myself. I looked at the schematic and it had most of the part numbers on it.

But I could not find matches for:
2sk389 (Q22) looks like a dual transistor. It may not be damaged as it is outside of the blast radius

and:
2sc2878 was out of stock at B&D. this is also outside the blast radius so it has a prayer of being ok.
