MX 113

I just picked up a McIntosh MX 113 preamp. It's in really nice shape and is my first foray into McIntosh gear. Haven't decided what I am going to pair it up with as far as amplifiers are concerned. Anyone else here have an MX 113, and what are your impressions? Thanks in advance.

Nice unit based on C26 preamplifier + MR74 AM/FM tuner (albeit simplified). Volume control often prone to L/R channel mistracking which is typical of McIntosh of this generation and earlier. Very good tuner section; phono section is also respectable. Loudness compensation circuit not so great- best left off. Ideal cosmetic match with the MC2505 power amplifier. Final McIntosh unit with solid aluminum knobs. Sold from 1971-1980.

I have a MX114, close to yours, mines been running on a MC250. The only Mac gear I own and I have been happy with it.

I have one. It seems like they don't get much love and I don't know why. Nice phono stage, I think the tuner is excellent. I had the tuner aligned because I still listen to FM and had it gone over by AC's. They changed a few odds and ends otherwise everything was in spec. I have it paired with a 250 in my garage and it sounds great. Pair it with anything in that era. 250 / 2205, 2100 / 2105 and you'll have a great system.

I completely restored my MX113 then sent out to a respectable tech to align the FM/AM.
The preamp sounds very good but now it is in the display cabinet.

Picked up a MX114 and MC2505 combo from the original owner. The little I have used them, they sound good together. Since getting them 5 years ago, prices have easily doubled.

Still thinking about a C28 instead of the 114; the 2505 is a keeper.

Enjoy your new gear!

As has been rightfully mentioned here, a 2505 would make for a beautiful companion to your unit.

I have a close cousin - an MX112 paired with a 2505 amp. As others have said, they are a cosmetic match. Even tho the amp is rated at 50wpc, every one I've heard of puts out 70wpc or a tad more. Its a great combination and not as physically large or heavy as the higher watt amps.
