MX119 Video Help

Help! I have had an MX119 for about six years, and it has (and does) work wonderfully. My issue is that I recently upgraded my TV to a "Samsung UN46B8500 46-Inch 1080p 240 Hz LED HDTV". I have the new TV connected to the MX119 with component video (no HDMI output on the MX119). This has worked fine with my existing video inputs which are all connected to the MX119 with component cables also.

Recently, however, I went to access the Settings Menu on the MX119 and I could not get it to display on the new TV. I finally had to get a smaller TV and connect it to the MX119 by S-video. This worked OK, and I changed what I needed to. Still, I don't want to have a move a TV around every time I want to access the Settings Menu.

Moreover, I wanted to add a Wii to the system. The Wii only has composite video out. I ran this to one of the normal MX119 video in areas and carefully checked the settings. Again, I could not get any video from this set up on the main TV (or the smaller TV) through the MX119. Audio worked fine. I tried using the video upscaling option in the settings, and that did not help. I also connected the Wii to the smaller TV by composite video and it worked fine. I do not want to (and cannot) connect the Wii to my new big TV directly.

So, why would the new TV not recognize either the Settings Menu video feed or the Wii video signals but does see everything that is input through component video?

I also have a MX-119, but I don't run my video through it at all. The only video connection I have through it are for my MS-750 (component) and for the setup menu.

I go HDMI direct from my Xbox, Oppo BDP83E, and HD DVR to my Panosonic plasma for video and go digital (and analog for the Oppo also) to the MX-119 for audio. There was no advantage for me that I could determine to run my video through the MX-119.
 
Do you get the set up menu through component out to your new TV? If not very carefully check that the component cables are connected correctly at both ends.

Is it possible the TV is set to only accept certain scan rates? If everything you have coming into the TV is at, say, 1080 or 720, it may not recognize the standard def menu screen from your MX119. WHile it was more than ten years ago now, I recall an early model Samsung flat-screen I ran into that did exactly this-- cetain input connections would only accept certain scan rates. I'd find it hard to believe that a current production TV would have this drawback, but hey-- check the user manual or run through the TV set's setup menus to check for this possibility.

Sorry for the delay in responding; was on the road. The component cables seem to be fine. I am able to see DVD and Cable Box TV through the MX119 on the TV no problem. Both of these use component inputs into the MX119. The only things I cannot see are the setup menu and the Wii (which is using a composite input in the MX119, the Wii only having a composite output). Also, I was able to get the setup menu to work on the component out cables on my old flat screen TV no problem. Tim

You mean for the Wii... yes, I checked that in the setup carefully. The really puzzling thing is that the MX119 setup menu won't display. Is there something about how that would be output through the component video that would make it hard to display? The TV reports "no signal", but when I switch to the cable, DVD or MS300 (all component in), it works fine.
 
Would the MX120 help resolve this issue? Also, the Wii video output is supposed to be 480p.
Updates:
(1) The Wii is only 480p if you use the optional component video cables, which I have ordered. Otherwise it is 480i.
(2) The TV recognizes composite video through the composite video input source but not, apparently, through the component video input source (same physical input plugs, different source option on the TV menu). This worked for the setup menu.
(3) With the MX120 I could connect the cable box and DVD to the MX120 with HDMI and the Wii and MS300 with component video. The MX120 could connect to the TV with HDMI. This would leave the setup menu. If this does not work through HDMI, I could run it as a separate composite video input to the TV, the composite/component plugs having been made available with the switch to HDMI on the MX120.

Many units from many manufacturers will not output the menu systems via the component outputs, only composite or RF. I think this may have to do with the 480i formatting of the menu systems and not having the added cost of including a converter to a component signal from the menu video drivers.

Excerpt from the Manual

Note: One of the MX119 MON A Video OUTPUTS must be
connected to the video input of a Monitor/TV for
viewing the On Screen Menus.
 
The menu outputs on all video outs of the MX119. Again this appears to be an issue with the set accepting a lower line rate. New sets are not dealing with anything below 480P in many cases. I expect to see the dropping of any inputs below HDMI as the next step.
