My ‘new’ system...

Just put together...

1. Realistic STA-240 receiver...
2. Mordaunt-Short Pageant Series 2 speakers...
3. Pioneer PL-570 turntable...

The speakers and receiver cleaned up very nicely with Howard’s Feed ‘N Wax....

So far, loving the sound I’m getting.

Question:
My son hooked up a streaming device to the receiver aux connection. Just listened to “Norwegian Wood” by the Beatles...the vocals were barely audible...I’m presuming they were lost in translation so to speak through conversion of digital into analog?? Thoughts?

Regarding the "lost" vocals - I think there may be something wrong with the connections or internally. No idea what it might be. Speakers hooked up correctly? Don't know what version of the recording your streamer used - but early Beatles were "primitive" stereo mixes. Sometimes all the lead vocal would be on one side of the mix. Sounds odd, but I've noticed other weird things in the Beatles mixes. Someone else will probably chime in with better info, but I'd look again at all the connections. Sometimes just unplugging and plugging back in will clean some corrosion off. That's one of the biggest problems with older equipment. Try connecting what SHOULD be right to the actual left and vice versa and see if the problem follows or is reversed. If you only get an odd result on ONE song, I'd be surprised. Play that same song on a different system and see what happens.

Don't know anything about Mordaunt-Short speakers. Where are you located? Across the pond?

About the vocals loss...let me more specific...
It only happened with particular songs. Norwegian Wood was one...other songs sound great...which leads me to believe that it’s the recording and the translation of older music into digital format...

And I’m in Canada...btw.

I'm 100% digital (for many years) and have never had this problem. I would question the origin of the recordings and/or the hookup and/or condition of the electronics/cables involved.

I’m inclined to agree that it’s the recording...as soon as I switch to the phono, the sound is full and rich.
 
Could be the streaming device, the connecting cable for it, improper connection, or your receiver itself. Just check one thing at a time. Is there another input on the receiver? What streaming device is it?
 
That's a nice, clean looking receiver. Seems to have nice power as well. Like I said earlier, I don't know anything about those speakers. I would say you might want to get them mounted up on some sort of stand. I find I like the sound better when the tweeters are just about at ear height when I'm seated in my listening position. You can lose a lot when they are just sitting on the floor.

Thanks for the response! Yes, the receiver has 60W per channel. And I think that’s my next step: stands for the speakers. I also swapped out the Pioneer TT for my JVC QL-A51. Sounds fantastic! (Is love to find a new lid for it.)

Update on the ‘Beatles issue’...
I’ve played with levels and volume controls...to no avail. The issue only presents itself on certain songs however.

‘Norwegian Wood’ sounds great except for vocals that are barely audible. On ‘Yesterday’, the guitar in the beginning is almost non-existent. However, it sounds like Paul is singing right beside me. ‘Let It Be’ is good all around. Not that I completely understand it, but leads me to believe that it has to do with the digital translation of the song?

Of course, listening to the same songs on vinyl produces a beautiful sound...instruments and vocals all sound fantastic!!

ONLY if the "translation" was poorly done. Again, I've been 100% digital for what seems close to 20 years now. And there are many other AKers who have a large part, if not all, of their collections digitized as well. Add in all the music streaming services who's libraries are all in digital format - some of it at high resolution. I don't want you to think "digital music" is hit-or-miss. Lol!! What is the source of the music/songs with issues?
