My 68 Chevelle

I picked up a 68 Malibu 2 years ago. It came with a stock, matching number 327 with orig. 2 gear powerglide. That winter, I pulled the engine to clean it up, renew the seals and repaint it to seal it. But, right around when I completed the rebuild - I bought a nice 396, cleaned up the engine bay and dropped her in.

The 396 is sporting: Holley 750, Flowtech Ceramic headers, Stainless piping, Dual Cherry Bomb Mufflers (no, not the ricer kind :P), Edelbrock Performer 2.0 intake, March pulleys. I just picked up a set of Aluminum Edelbrock heads and a nice cam for this summer.

The story behind me buying the car is pretty simple. My dad has owned a 64 corvette for awhile now. As a kid, getting my licence and whatnot I wanted to drive it around, you know, be that 'cool kid'. It never happened, I was lucky to be able to look at it. So, I was able to get a bank line of credit, bought my own - and you know what? Now he hasn't and will not get to drive my car ;)

Holy crap man, that's a nice car!:drool:, I can't see a single thing wrong with it, just perfect...wow...

What type of cheery bombs did you go with- our '68 mustang still has a 30 year old set of glasspacks, from my readings, all cherry bombs sound nice and last a long time- quality mufflers:yes:.
 
the words with which to describe how badass your car is have yet to be invented....750cfm and a sweet cam, wow....what are your plans for the 327 cid? always loved that engine

Everything you have done is perfect!! Especially swapping the 327 for the 396.

I bet she's a handful from a dead stop with a heavy right foot :D :D

Big fan of Rat motors here,I had a 427/4spd '69 Camaro for 14 years and my 4X4 '78 GMC pickup sports a 454.:yes:
 
haha thanks guys, I’ll make sure to post some new pics after I get the heads on. I'll have to double check on the mufflers, I’m not 100% sure as they came with the sale - but I’d like to say turbo?

I forgot to mention, I threw in a 3pd turbo tranny, did not want to damage the matching number engine and tranny because IF...I did happen to ever sell it, I’m sure someone would dig the matching sets.

I did however - search high and low for a 427 or 454 instead of the 396. But, the 396 was easily accessible, came out of a 68 SS Chevelle, and was in really good condition.

I'll make sure to throw up some more once shes out of storage, and i dont blame my dad either...now we have a nice little 1/4 mile to prove :)

I was gonna ask if you put that old powerslide behind the 396 Rat.:D
Personally I like 427's best but I'd take a 396 over a 454 in most cases,396's are great engines and spin up faster than 454's.
I really like 396's,one of the best Chevy engines ever.:thmbsp:
 
man I love the car. You did some very nice work on it.
I had a 68 SS 396 for 15 years before I traded it for a 67 Chevy II
If those heads you are planning to put on the 396 have a 2.250 or 2.300 intake valve, be careful and check for valve-cylinder interference. The 396 has a smaller bore and the valve can hit the edge of the cylinder. You can grind a relief in the block, just be sure not to go down as far as the ring travel.
Also those heads may be way too big for your cubic inch. To combat that, use a low duration camshaft. You only need enough air to fill the cylinder, and with good heads that can be accomplished in a very short time.

I really like it,Reminds me of the Chevelle that Brad Pitt drove in one of those tales from the Crypt episode"King of the Road" where he races an older guy with a blown '57 Chevy!Now you might want to paint Z/28 stripes on it!(But it looks great as it is).

Man I love it!

There is a Art Morrison full tube chassis for your car at our shop (above the office) that will likely never get welded up and assembled.... really sad thing.
