My Audiokarma is finally heading in the right direction!

Had a couple nice scores yesterday and more again today! Got a PE 3012 turntable that will be nice with a little work, a Galaxy ham transceiver w/speaker and astatic mic, little Silvertone mono receiver and about 160 lps for a total of $42. The lps are mostly R&R , have rough jackets but vinyl appears to be vg+ or better for the most part. Cool thing about the vinyl is it fills in the gaps in my collection very well of artists I already have and enjoy. Here's a few of the artists.

I was well overdue ,I hunt audio every weekend and had little to show for my time and efforts. I could go back to one of the places I've made most of the purchases this weekend and I'm sure they would tell me to haul stuff away for free. The problem with that is I already have so much stuff I can barely store it now , when it's free it's hard not to go into a feeding frenzy mod and drag everything home I am remotely interested in. The last garage sale I hosted I gave away lots of stuff and I hope I am finally getting more selective and only purchase items I will use or items that will help pay for stuff like the three amps I aquired last month.

The D104 crystal mike is pretty cool.

That whole outfit is very cool with that giant transformer in the power supply it definately has got to have some power, like 400watt if I have identified it correctly. I am guessing it is HAM transceiver by the dial but I don't know jack about that kind of stuff, it did sell for $420 in 1967, gotta be the good stuff! You are of course correct in your identification of the Astatic D104 microphone. :thmbsp:

Yep, looks like an early Galaxy III or V, I think, can't really tell much from your photo, but yep, it's Ham band only transceiver, 300 watts input power, if it's a III it has 80-40-20 meter Ham band operation...or if it's a five band model, a Galaxy V...same 300 watts input power, but adds the 15 and 10 meter Ham bands....

Those are quite powerful and compact little units, I had a few of them through the years, cumulating in the last one of the series, the GT550....but I gave up all of them when I really got interested in Collins gear...but I did make many, many contacts in the past on Galaxy rigs...lots of fun...

The albums look like good fillers...but the PE, well, pedestrian...tonearm looks like a plastic-fantastic piece with limited quality...definitely not up to most of the better Dual turntable range...looks very similar to a Dual 1215....might be fun to play with, but not a real high level piece of gear...

But hey, for the price you got everything?

You ought to be able to make back more than what you spent if you put the Galaxy setup on ebay...just don't try and power it up without knowing what you are doing! There's some truly lethal voltages in that little set of boxes! And sell the Astatic separately...

The Galaxy is a V MKII 400 watt unit with power supply & speaker. I was thinking along the same lines as you suggested, sell the mic seperately. Thanks for your opinion on that, great minds think alike.
I will probably try and get the PE going just to here it play. They do have a similiar feel about them to the Dual table as far as the platter goes and it's a rim drive so I'm guessing it's pretty quiet as it appears to have a solid motor behind it. The tone arm does look kind of hokey but you never know with tone arms. I see a lot of hokey looking arms selling on Ebay for pretty good money on a regular basis so they either sound a lot better than they look or there are a lot of stupid people out there. I have 25+ tables so I didn't buy this to be my main rig but it might be right for someone who is just getting started into vinyl or maybe if it restores well it may remain in my collection as an example of PE design. I restore things that are still usable when I can just so people in the future get to observe design before there time. I try to keep stuff out of the landfill that may still serve a purpous. No, it won't take the place of my Sota but it may still be capable of bringing joy to someone who can't afford better. :thmbsp:

I had a couple of the Galaxy V's, a Mk II and a Mk III, and enjoyed them...in fact, I still have a power supply for one out in the garage...nice little rigs with a lot of power, but not real sophisticated, I preferred my Hallicrafters Cyclone III to them, and sold them off...then I sold the Hallicrafters, the old Yaesu FTdx series performed better than it...for old tube type Ham rigs the Collins gear just can't be beat...there's reason the Military used them, and pretty much only their products, for so long...and that's why I don't use anything but Collins when I use a classic, tube type, rig on the air today....

You're right about the input power, the later Galaxies were 400 watters, vs., the 300 watts of the first Galaxies...that equated to at least 250 watts out to the antenna with fresh sweep tubes in the finals....

But I am glad to see that the PE won't become your main rig!!! I guess it would be OK for a starter setup, but that's about it, and you do have the right attitude about it!

You've got my PE!!!! Well...at least the twin to the one the crazy ex-wife tossed onto the lawn. IIRC, the tone arm is die-cast aluminum. Mine came with an M44, later I popped in a Stanton 500E. I always liked the table...clean design, worked well. Not TOTL by any means...but it was reliable and played well. Nice grab on the Galaxy!! Even came with the power supply/speaker combo! Unless you decide to get licensed, flipping the D104 could bring some $. Ever think about getting you ham license? Go to www.QRZ.com, click "sample tests", start with Technician and see how you do. You can go back question by question & keep trying till you get the correct answer. Basic theory does the trick...most everything else is rules & regs.

Cool scores! Not too impressed with the audio-potential appearance of the PE (reminds me of cheaper Garrards or even BSRs), but it has a nice vintage-decoration look to it.

The records? Nice haul, and extra-nice since it fills gaps for you! :yes:

That transceiver is cool, esp. if you have a ham license or will get one. Even ifyou don't become a ham D) and decide to sell it, instead, if I were you, I'd keep the microphone. It's just too cool-looking a decoration alone, to easily part with it!

Overall, I'd say the Audio Gods noticed your drought, and decided to do something to reward your patience and persistence. Congratulations! :thmbsp:
