My Boston CR8's got beat to hell during shipping

Fedex called and said that after being lost for a couple of weeks, they found my 2 pair of Boston Acoustics CR8's. The bad news is they've been beat down pretty good and I know for a fact they were boxed as good as you could possibly box speakers. Sounds like some pretty serious cabinet damage. I have no idea if they still work but I told them to send them anyway. The seller is really cool and is going to reimburse me 100% if nothing is in working order. What was really shocking is how Fedex has taken zero responsibility. The seller has worked with them before and said he's sure they'll reject his first claim. That's just how they do it, even after admitting they lost and damaged them. REJECT :thumbsdn:

Yup ... Thanks UPS!.....I've experienced a nice pair of Celestion 1's...front grill squashed into tweeter! Luckily I had an extra tweeter + grill! The titanium dome popped out, with a butter knife handle ...95%. Still worked good!

Two receiver cases damaged.....8080db Sansui wooden case collapsed + Onkyo 7.1..nice 2" dent on corner of steel case... of what use to be a mint receiver!!

The key is fight the claims. The UPS store I deal with is a franchise- often they say you must submit 3 times.

As a franchise, they too, have to submit a claim- often two or three times.

I wish you well, though!

Sorry to hear about the damage. It's too bad, the speakers were delayed in shipment. The shorter shipment time, the less handling and less exposure for bad packaging to fail.

I'd blame the packaging not the shipper if there is cabinet damage. Packages *will* be dropped, shifted and stacked - if you accept that, you pack appropriately. Were the speakers "boxed" well enough to survive a 3 foot drop to a concrete floor? 2 inches of Rigid foam on a exposed surfaces? Take a look at how speaker manufacturers package speakers for shipment.

I hope you can sort things out - it sounds like you have a cooperative seller.

I always take pictures of how I packed and item and keep them until it is received on the other end. In case of a damage claim I figure being able to show how it went into their system could be useful.

I use FedEx Ground for anything above a few pounds. So far, about a year doing so, they've been great. I had not heard they were bad on claims but I suppose it doesn't surprise me. Every shipper has been buried with fraudulent claims and they likely kick back to weed some of them out.

IIRC, the CR8 is V-groove cabinet wrap with molded plastic front & rear baffles. If they are dropped they can spring apart at the glue lines. The upside is that they go back together pretty easily and any breaks can be camouflaged. The glue main line will be on the bottom. Hopefully the grilles weren't bent in. You can't get new ones anymore as Boston dumpstered all their old stock parts a few years ago.

Bummer... Sorry to hear that.

FedEx is the worst shipper IMO. Uups is not as bad, but for the last few years I've payed the extra cost for the Post Office unless it's over their weight limits, then I use Uups. The PO is much better to deal with than anyone else on a claim. I'll never use FedEx again. Not only did they destroy several well packed items but lost one as well.

Lots of foam board, at $7 a sheet it make for cheap insurance! Put a speaker in a 1.5" casket of that stuff and the damage problems are reduced to nothing. Also use a double wall boxes really helps as well.
FWIW I am sorry to know about your damage, I often have found it can usually be prevented....up to a point of course.

THE SPEAKERS WERE BOXED JUST ABOUT AS WELL AS YOU COULD POSSIBLY BOX THEM. Double boxed with custom cut foam and the outer box was a special triple-ply cardboard. Very strong stuff.

Fedex said at some point the information came off of the box and they had to open it to figure out what was in there. I suspect they threw them back in the box without proper packaging and away they went. I've been told this is how Fedex operates. They make no effort to re-pack your stuff to any acceptable level.

An update on my BA CR8's that Fedex lost and damaged...

As expected, it was a difficult claim process but they ultimately paid. I originally paid $200 for the 4 speakers delivered and the seller refunded me $150. I'm not sure if he got anything out the deal. All 4 speakers seem to work as expected with noticeable damage to 2 of them and minor damage to the other 2. So it worked out pretty well, $50 for 4 damaged CR8's delivered.

I put the 2 speakers with noticeable damage in my large ice fishing shack paired with a Yamaha RX-770 receiver. The 8' x 15' fish shack absolutely rocks!!! It probably doesn't help the fishing much, but who's out there to catch fish anyway!

I've had the opposite experience. Quit shipping UPS.
