My brother's Saturday Garage Sale Finds

So my brother calls me at about 9am Saturday morning - he knows to check with me if he finds audio gear. Says there are some tubes, a big tube amp for $250 and spare output tubes to go with it, a tube preamp, some large old speakers for $50, and some other gear too. I talk to him for about 15 minutes and get him to ask a bunch of questions. About 15 minutes after that here's the tally:

First set of tubes - Raytheon (Japanese) EL34/6CA7's, 8 of them.

Big Tube Amp - Conrad-Johnson Premiere One power amp with 8 6550 tubes inside PLUS 8 additional ECG/Philips 6550 (USA made, prob. rebranded GE) spare tubes!!

Tube preamp - Stock Dynaco PAS3

Large old speakers - pair of Dahlquist DQ-10's, decent cosmetic shape, couldn't see if woofers needed reconing, were working when put into storage. No external crossover or supplemental DQ-1W woofer though.

He bought all the above for the grand total of $300!! :thmbsp::banana:

Other gear - a black Yamaha TC800 Wedge shaped cassette deck, midfi Marantz TT2000 table, and a Denon double cassette.

However, there apparently was other stuff in the Garage rafters (a receiver with wooden case, a Marantz amp (maybe an 8????) and some other stuff that wasn't for sale and my brother didn't want to seem pushy.

So pretty decent haul, my brother's pretty good at this garage sale-ing stuff.

Regards,

Bart

Wow - $50 for DQ 10s. Those are nice BIG speakers to run into at a G sale.

Congratulations. Is your brother buying on your behalf, or does he keep this stuff?

Hi SpeakerLabFan,

Mostly he buys for himself, and we didn't discuss sharing on this one, although I'm sure he wouldn't mind me offering him some money to "rent" some of the pieces out. However, I've got way too many speakers to be bringing the DQ-10's home to play with.

However, there are a number of things he has bought for me at my request or we share together in the past that I've got to get around to cleaning up.(Edited by Fisherdude.)

Here's a sampling of what's in the queue:

Marantz 1200B
Marantz 7T
Scott 265 mono Tube power amps X 3
McIntosh C8 and C8S mono preamps X 4 total
Dynaco ST70
A few others I can't remember now.

He's a really good brother, and he also buys a lot of Golf clubs and tools (which I borrow endlessly!!)

Regards,

Bart

Holy Moly! Man, that is some great gear for 3 bills. More than a lucky find...your bro was prepared (had the $$$ on him) and did the research (called you) and deserves to be rewarded.

Not exactly sure of current market value, but i'm pretty sure that Premier One would have still been a steal at $3000................ When is the last time you even saw a 200wpc stereo tube amplifier?

In it's day it was proclaimed by reveiwers to be the best sounding amplifier ever made................. FWIW, the Premier One B was essentially the same amplifier except used eight EL34's instead of 6550's.

Now thats a heck of a score. Normally whenever I go garage sale browsing, I find amps in the form of some junky BPC or earlier vintage cheap trash, and matching big speakers with tiny drivers.

You owe your brother big time. The best my brother would do for me is a call to look at some old car in the middle of the night.
