My cat is gone. What happened?

last week I noticed that my 14 year old cat Sly was not himself and looked like he had lost some weight, so Friday I took him to our vet that we have used for 20 plus years. While at the vet he was active and wanting to explore the room and purring loudly while I held him to keep him from jumping off of the examination table. The vet looked him over and could not find anything obvious so he suggested some bloodwork and we agreed. I knew Sly got anxious at the vet so I wanted to go with him to help keep him calm but the vet said he would be fine and for me to wait in the exam room. When he returned with him Sly laid down lmmediatly, was not as alert and began making a snoring type noise. I noticed he drew the blood from his neck. The vet said his liver was inflamed and gave him an antibiotic, an anti inflammatory and something to help his appetite. When we got home I could see he was not acting the same as before I took him. Through the night he got worse and by noon Saturday he was suffering badly. He laid in the floor and peed on himself and was crying out in pain he was still makeing the snoring noise and looked like he was not aware of his surroundings so I took Him back to the vet. We talked to the same vet I had seen on Friday. He said his breathing was shallow and his heart was not beating right and his body temperature was falling, basically he was dying so I said my goodbyes and let him go. I could not stand to see him suffer any longer. The vet was sympathetic and didn’t understand either. What happened? he was sick but alert and active when I got there and started going down hill before I left. Did he have a heart attack while there, did he have a stroke, did the vet make a mistake taking the blood. I’m just heart broken and trying figure out what happened.

My condolences on the passing of your feline companion. :(
Give it some time then please consider adopting a kitten from the shelter. There is one there right now that needs a loving home and a new best friend.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

My 15 year old Birman died recently in similar circumstances. I have no real answers other than massive organ failure.

It takes a long time and many tears before you will be whole again. Talk about it as much as you need, I'll be here.

...Give it some time then please consider adopting a kitten from the shelter...

It took me 6 months and then I met Julio at the RSPCA. He is a cheeky male 2 year old tuxedo black and white. Now I am back buying cat food, vacuuming up fur and emptying litter trays again.

It gets better.

We still have 4 left from an all time high of 10 so we’re still in business. Sly was just my special boy, he was always so happy to see me when I got home from work and would sit with me all day if he could.

I had this happen to a 12 year old dog that suddenly became sick and was in a lot of pain. Had to put him to sleep. I feel your pain.Losing one of the family.

We lost a dog unexpectedly. This was 3 years ago, and I still have unanswered questions. It's hard, I know, and understand. Grieve for you cat, cherish the memories.

I'm really sorry!
I lost 2 cats in the last 3 months. One a week ago. One i had put down the other died in his sleep. Something is definitely missing in the house. 20 years is a good run for a cat. If he was healthy and comfortable for just about all that time he (and you) were lucky.
Sorry misread (vet of 20 years, cat 14)

My sincere condolences as well. I've had to say goodbye to two cats and it's heart-wrenching.

As for why your beloved little guy passed so suddenly, I can only say that cats often will hide symptoms for a long time, and that towards the end they do often go very quickly.

Very sorry for your loss, Cats are annoying as hell sometimes but we miss them when they're gone.

So sorry to hear of Sly's passing, it will get better with time, it's amazing how these little furballs occupy such a big place in our heart.

It will no doubt feel empty without him for a time but as others have said there is another loving kitty looking for love and a home when you are feeling ready. You will know when the right time has come.

My condolences to you and your family for the sudden loss of your buddy Sly. 14 wonderful loving years y'all shared, bless you for giving him a wonderful life.

Animals like humans have different reactions to drugs. In your cat's case, he might have been in that small number that had an allergic reaction to the either, both or perhaps a combo of them. These vet drugs are field tested, but there's always that slim chance of a bad reaction. In addition, the age of your cat might have been a mitigating factor as well.

In any case, it was a sad, unexpected result, much like we humans face when ever we have to go into a surgical situation that us supposed to be an normal procedure with expected results...but something goes wrong.

So sorry for your loss of a friend.
