My DVD recorder is stereo, my TV is mono, how should I hook it up?

Hi.

My 2005 Sony video cassette recorder/DVD recorder has a RCA stereo output. And my older model Toshiba TV only has a mono input. How can I hook this up safely so that I can hear all of the sound/music? I don't mind that the resulting sound comes out in mono as my TV is mono. I just don't won't to miss out on half of the sound. Someone has said a simple Y adapter may damage my recorder and or TV. Is this true?

It would be remotely possible that a simple "Y" cable could damage the Sony outputs because it basically shorts them together.

A stereo to summed mono converter would be better. These can be put together with a few resistors. Check the Rane website (or just Google) for an article called "Why not Wye?". Figure 2 should do.

There may also be an option to configure the DVD/VCR for mono output in its menu.

If you don't mind using the RF output to feed your TV it's easy. You feed your cable box in one input and the DVD output on the other input. Feed the A/B switch output to the RF input to the TV. For under $10.00 and a Coax cable you're good to go...
