My first Dual. CS-622

Well took the plunge and purchased my first Dual today. It’s from a local guy who is respected locally in the vintage scene. Mechanically a 10/10, cosmetically 8.5/10.

The seller suspects the stylus has been replaced since it was made. And I guess time for me to learn about ULM.

I am aware there are aftermarket adaptors so I can use a standard (as it were) cartridge, but that also means i need to locate the extra weight for the tonearm which I have yet to locate.

For all you Dual folks, especially gurus educate me please. These are an entirely different beast from the Japanese stuff I feel comfortable working on.

From my research this is one of the more desirable models and I like that this one is direct drive.

Also on my first dual a 621. Your going to like it. Carts a abit to set up, but sound great when you hit that sweet spot.

I switched mine, using links provided here by @lini ; it consisted of a seller that produced 3D printed cart adapters and a Polish guy selling 10/20 gram weights to exact standards on Ebay (shipped was like $20). Best move I ever made, switched to a vintage Shure and sounded way better. I wish I had the links readily available, but sorry I don't, but maybe using the AK search feature you could find the older thread. Great table BTW, like it and my semi-auto 604.

But alternatively one could also consider Dualfred's ULM1-OMx (see there: https://www.dualfred.de/Tonearm/Cartridge--Stylus/Pickup-cartridge-300324-en.html, which in combination with an Ortofon needle 20 or 30 makes a nice solution (in terms of both quality and visual appearance), that doesn't require an adaptor plate and add-on weight disc(s).

I have had several of the 6 series tables. I think they sound great and look great. +1 on the OM line with a 20 stylus....they are far from cheap, but should be a great match with the ULM tonearm.

I’ll be running it through my early 70’s Pioneer stack.

Pioneer SA-8100 amp into Celestion D-332 speakers.

Hooking up tomorrow and am excited to hear it.

Looking at stylus replacement options, it's looking mostly like replicas....

So, the parts to change it up to add a regular cartridge (1/2") and weights for tone arm seem easy enough to get....

Cartridge wise I am currently think of a Ortofon Super OM 20 cart - it's a nude to the best of my understanding which I do appreciate. The OM 40 puts me into a realm I don't believe I am ready to go into (would need to buy a pre-amp)... and the weight factor (of cart, not tracking) seems very reasonable. Current exchange puts me at $370.xx CDN for it.

Anyone out there made this jump? Feedback?

Am in Canada so I'll be getting hosed as it were on shipping (and exchange) on the adapter as well as extra weights. Anyone got a good place in Canada for said cartridge? LP Gear seems to be my only real option, but have never dealt with them. TurntablesNeedles doesn't seem to stock it and I can't imagine how bad Ortofon will hammer me if I buy direct.

Cartridge bodies are all over the secondary market. I come across them all the time for free on project tables. Of the numerous bodies I have encountered only one was bad. Anecdotal at best, but have a look locally before dropping decent money.
