My first full gut and rebuild?

Well The Eico's HF22 are up and running. I know the old wax caps will have to go at some time. Now the Eico HF 20. It came in as a basket case. Transformers checked fine. No changing out one part and trying it like Frannie recommended on this one. Wires free (not soldered to anything etc) Rats nest inside. So do I snip all the wires to the tube sockets then desolder what is leftover. Or try to use the Hakko and fight it in the chassis.

Could you post a pic of the HF20, so we can see what sort of basket case/rat's nest lies beneath? Also, what are your plans for it? Use as an integrated, or a monobloc?

Dandy,Integrated,it has 2 phono inputs. One for mono Lp's the other will have a 78 hooked to it. It has 30+ eq settings for 78's.. Just trying to do this the smart way...the first time

The tube shield holder will not let it drop out the bottom 12ax7, 12au7

Thanks for posting the pics drtool. I see the problem, and you will want to hit, clean and repaint or touch up that chassis before the fresh assembly. I assume you've got the schematic? Was this a kit with construction manual or just a factory wired unit?

I would try and detach as much as possible all together. i.e. take the tube sockets and pots out with as much of the circuit attached as possible. Take LOTS of pics of detailed areas before you unsolder anything. Mark each of the transformer connections individually as you disconnect them.

Some of this is common sense but some is caution. The more you've got to refer to the easier the build will be. I know there are nice people here who will help with any troubleshooting, but it's satisfying to get as far as you can alone.

Thanks Dandy. I have a repop manual. This was a kit build. You are right ,just trying to do as much on my own and avoid as many noob blunders as possible. I did paint my traines first, so they could dry/crosslink before I put this back together. I did mark all the wires,but next time I am going to find my label maker and shrink over the label.

Brass screws? I don't know if it will affect the magnetic field.

I am thinking that brass would be better the any ferrous metal. This is why I see some copper chassis out there. Or so I figured. Please school me if I am wrong.

Thanks dandy for your kind words. The knobs were way harder to paint. I will post pics later of the knobs. First 10 times I tried to paint plastic anything, they just melted.

Yah I'd suggest just tearing it all apart and redo in 1 shot.
