My first Marantz 8b and all I have to say is...

Perkinsman

"I've never met a fixer that I couldn't break"
magnificent...prior to the 8b, I'd been using my recently rebuilt Eico hf30 monoblocks thru my Roger LS7t's, which are just a fine sounding set of speakers. When I connected the 8b, there was an audible difference, everything sounded better, highs, mids and well the lows too but as I turned up the volume from low to medium to loud, I started hearing a pop when the bass hit. It seemed to happened in one channel a little more than the other....the foam looks fine in both speakers....please don't tell me it's the voice coil. Any ideas on how to test them?

Yeah, it is heck of an amplifier.
I had the privilege of rehabbing one for a fellow in MA.

Perhaps all you are hearing is the woofer 'bottoming out'?
I am not sure that the foam's "looking fine" necessarily means that it is fine.
One simple test; swap the amp's outputs to the two speakers and make sure the "pop" is associated with the speaker and not the amplifier.

Congrats on your 8b.

Mine was a big surprise also. I wasn't expecting much from it, bought it to go with my 7c/10b and to play when in the mood. I was just hoping for decent enough but it far surpassed that.

This vintage system shares time with my more modern CJ ART preamp/Pass XA30.5 or 300b SET combo and does NOT embarrass itself ever.

On your popping...do what mhardy6647 suggested to see if it's the speaker. If not the speaker, swap the tubes from one channel to the other. Good luck.

It occured in both speakers last night but today I couldn't get it to do it....maybe just the recording that was on the radio....and I never listen at that volume...btw, how many wpc is the 8b? It says 250W on the back, is that 125 wpc?? That might be why the speaker bottomed out.

Consumer laws state that electrical devices must have labels stating power usage (and draw from the wall socket) so that power draw can be calculated and not exceed the wall current (typically 120V x 15 amps for modern wiring = 1800 watts).

The 8B as mentioned is 30 watts RMS per channel in ultralinear pentode, about 18 watts triode per the Marantz brochure (and line voltage of 117V).

That's the Model 8 brochure. The 8B specs are a little different.

Sorry, my bad, absolutely correct. Here's a nice trifold with specs for everything, I only wish I had purchased this stuff in the 70's when I first saw it, did get the 8B's and 7's in the 80's-90's though.

Anyone ever get to listen to a Marantz 2 or 5 and compared it to 8-8B or 9 within its power range?

125w is power consumption
