My first New Turntable since the 1980,s

A few weeks ago I got this Pro-Ject DEBUT Carbon DC new in damaged box. A gentleman I have known since the 1980,s came by work where he was delivering some items for our three day advertising sale. He is in the damaged freight business and had this in his truck I told what it was and what it is selling for new, he told if I wanted to "roll the dice" and take a chance he would sell it to me for, well a great deal. When I opened box turntable was not damaged and I set it up works just find. Have no idea how he got this, he has many buildings filled with freight damaged items.

I just resurrected my old Project Esprit Carbon--basically a Debut with an Acrylic platter--for mono playback. It has an older AC motor which I thought could be an issue since my mono cartridge is a Grado ME+ which is known to hum on turntables with AC motors; however, the location of the motor is such that I'm only hearing a slight bit of hum at very high volume when the stylus reaches the runout grooves.

What surprised me most was the amount of bass that the little Project is able to muster. It also exhibits very punchy midrange and lots of detail in the high end. I think that some of it can be attributed to the design of the Grado cart and the excellent care that has gone into the microgroove mono reissues of albums by the Beatles, Beach Boys, etc. My older mono albums--some of them are 50+ years old--also sound very good with much less snap, crackle and pop compared to the way that they sound on my VPI/Grado Master setup.
