I’ve been playing music for 15 years and have always been passionate about finding the right sound, but I never really translated that nuance and depth into recorded music until my more recent years. That’s what sent me down the audiophile road; it started with a Yamaha R-300 paired with a set of JBL P30’s and a U-Turn Orbit Custom TT. That setup had me content for a while, and over the past 10 years I’ve built a humble record and cassette collection, a deeper appreciation for recorded music, and began releasing recorded music of my own.
In recent years, I found myself wanting more from my setup... as we all eventually do. The U-Turn was replaced with an open box Pro-Ject Debut Carbon, and a Pioneer SX-780 was found on offerup for $100. This opened up my speakers in spectacular ways... I wasn’t ready to stop.
After developing quite the obsession with Ohm speakers and in particular the Walsh drivers, these G2’s popped up on FB Marketplace and I setup a time to meet the buyer, and even better I had a trade he was happy to take.
Since then, the 780 has been replaced with an 880, the Pro-Ject with a beautiful H/K deck (gotta keep it vintage) and I found a killer 80’s NEC sub to go with everything.
The soundstage on the Ohm’s is massive, open, and fills a room without begging you to crank the volume knob. The imaging is breathtaking... it almost has a surround sound like feel to it. When playing Minnie Ripperton and Dionne Warwick, I never got the ever present breakup in the high end that my JBL’s would have, just smooth, rich, warm highs. I’m pretty infatuated with these speakers if I’m being honest... and they’re being run “ported” right now, without the passive radiators, so I really look forward to hearing them at full force.
