My first receiver is a dud.

i can jump on the poorley packed broke gear blues bandwagon....

i do like another said, i preask how he/she tends to package the gear. when i bought my turtable, i gave specific directions to fully disassemble it and ship properly
 
I think when a seller doesn't get much for their item, they are even less likely to take time and effort to pack.

The slightly harsh words above are regrettable, but I would second the suggestion of buying from AKers. I've had great experiences both buying and selling. Just got a gorgeous mint Yamaha CR-1040 from Vintageaudio, shipped from the E. Coast to MO without a scratch. Deffly worth the asking price, and people here are a caring and trustworthy lot generally speaking.
 
Never again anything large or delicate from eBay, unless it's local. Most people can't/won't pack things properly. The hassle isn't worth it for me, so it has to be local. Just takes more patience... :)
