TD 160 Base Mod

Thanks so much for the tip! I drilled the holes in the new base big enough to fit a 1/4" drive deep socket. I'll have to veneer the sides somehow, but for now I'm happy with the results. I tried the "foot fall" test........not bad. I also added some leveling feet to the base, they're from my local hardware store. I know they're not "audiophile" but they'll do for now.

It may not sound as good as it looks, but I bevelled the bottom of my 3/4" base with a router and then painted it black. It really makes the wood plinth stand out and is a nice match for the black on the table and smoke colored dustcover. Im going to do the same for my TD150 next.

Right under my nose!
I like the idea of painting the base edge black. I was in such a hurry to try it out that I failed to notice that under the very credenza that my equiptment sits on is the shelf that I removed to fit the albums! It's oak veneer with a finished edge, so maybe ill make two bases.

Tupperware lids
Ok so this is day 8 of everything Thorens. It's not a obsession I can quit anytime I want. I added some cork to dampen the chassis and the sub platter. I used cork In case I didn't like the mod, I could Easily take it off. A Tupperware lid worked perfectly for the sub platter template! (I couldn't find my protractor) who knew that my teachers were right when they said I'd be using math and geometry as an adult. I also took a look at some oak and walnut today, I'm thinking about a custom plinth. I'm going to hold out until I find just the right wood.

I'd like to thank all the people who took the time to post their experiences on AK. I've done a lot of reading and I sure couldn't have figured this stuff out by myself. It's funny but the greatest satisfaction came from making some "cork hold downs" for the tone arm leads.

I realise that this is an old thread that I am trying to resurrect but I'm new and inexperienced!
I have just bought a TD160 in ok cosmetic condition but needs attention to the motor (bent spindle) and all the usual stuff. This is my first decent deck and a project that i'm taking on to help with the boredom of convalescing at home for the next month or so. I know almost zero about how decks work and my soldering is atrocious but I'm keen to resurrect this lovely looking thing. Some really useful threads on this site and I'm hoping to get a bit of support from the community here.
Question: Who has all the TP 16 headshells? I am desperate for one but can only see people splitting them from the tone arm and selling them for silly money on ebay! This seems very mean spirited in light of the fact that neither one really works without the other.
Does anyone here have one in a draw somewhere that they don't mind parting with for a bit of cash?
ps. Yes, yes; the SME's are fantastic, and a Rega would be an economical way to begin modding, but I want to be faithful to the original setup that the Thorens crew designed as much as possible. A sympathetic restoration.

The headshell for these arms sell for 50-100 bucks. Not many had extras back in the day and they are unique to the arm so they command a price. Just one of those things. They also use only one size of metric bolts unless the shell is modified.
The motor, hopefully you can correct the bend as those motors are not too common.

Thank you fellas (blue shadow). I managed to get a headshell from a friend of a friend for £30 so not too bad. (still not pleased with those out there who are splitting the arm from the shell. Shame on you miserly so and so's!).
I've started the new plinth in walnut and I'm going to re-loom the tone arm next. Wish me luck.

I bought this yesterday from my local CL. A TD 160 with what I believe to be a stock TP16 tone arm, and a Signet 7Ea cartridge. It has a hum coming from the RCA end of the cable and the lift arm is missing from the head shell. Other than that its super clean and plays. I'm looking forward to upgrading what I can and modifying where appropriate. Any suggestions are welcome. This is my first Thorens and I'm really excited about it.

cosmoline got his table in 2013. New to This bumped this old thread a few days ago. Whatever them Thorens tables are nice.
