My JBL 4430's

I'm moving next month so I have a lot of things packed away. Just took a peak and couldn't find my folder of samples... Really though, I wouldn't bother. The sample from the Bay is on its way so I'll let you know how that turns out shortly. With a photo...

Where are you heading to? Still will be in SoCal?

Wow, something weird is happening with the quoting of posts. The text is partly disappearing, select with your mouse and you'll see it is still there though.

My pleasure.

If SW material was a bit heavier, it would be a solid contender. I found thevfabric to be very thin, with little stretch and susceptible to snagging and adhesive bleed through. I agree about the color, I see grey / gun sliver in it too. But not in a bad way.

If you want maroon, I have a supply of Rick's ( from Kenrick Sound ) original JBL fabric. It's a much nicer color in person. Below is an updated photo with the JBL maroon. I'll mail you a sample today for your review.

As far as I know, yes Rick has the only supply of blue.
Besides blue, Rick also sourced black and maroon.
I have a supply of maroon from Rick.
And more accurately, it's not that the supply ran out, it's more like Rick's not selling it.

I am pretty much a horn fan... I have always felt the L300 a little harsh for my taste (especially without lenses) but the overall package kind of makes up for it. I also feel modified x-overs (when I find the time) will help since they are getting on in age and I consider caps wear (with age) type items anyhow.

I believe the shorter the horn the wider the dispersion and more to my liking, The 300's definitely have a long thin horn as do the higher end klipsch models which kind of bother me as well. I guess this kind of think also leads into why the Edgar horn works as well as it does and intrigues me about the butt check horn in the 4430 / 4435.

4430 has less phase issue and better overall directivity than 4343 type, and UREI JBL 813 has even better phase coherence and better midrange directivity than 4430, but each type has its own charm!

I like horn, too, but I feel computer designed modern short horn (waveguide) that has little diffraction doesn’t sound like horn any more. I personally prefer 2 way horn system, or 2 way + super tweeter, or 2 way + sub.

Well!

They have arrived.

Many thanks to Jedidiah for picking them up for me.

These guys really are massive! Those are 4313b's in the middle for comparison.

I'll snap some more photos to show their condition. Not too bad - they should cleanup real nice!

My initial listen impression was not as pleasant as I had expected.

Boomy low-end and lacking in the high-end.

I wasn't too surprised to have this reaction, based on everything I have read.

My goal in purchasing these speakers was to find a speakers that are simple and robust. They have definitely accomplished that!

Right now I am running them through my Jolida FX10 Amp - about 10 watts per channel.

Here's my plan for my journey:

  • Clean L-Pads and Bi-amp Switch
  • Open up the 2421s Check for deteriorated foam
  • New grill cloth
  • Sand & Paint Baffle
  • Replace one 2344 horn (a thin chuck is missing)
  • Restore Veneer

I am planning on trying out different amps - solid state and higher powered tube amps. I'd like to get an EQ to see if I can't eliminate some of my low and high end issues.

Glad to see you have them after the long search, I am running my adjustments at flat for mids and +1 for highs. Room acoustics, and what your driving them with can make a big difference. I'm really liking mine on my Fisher 500-C, and looking forward to hearing them on my Dynaco ST-70.

Very nice CJ.:thmbsp:

Ha, glad to see you using those stands for your 4313b's, I just built another pair for my 4310's.

They are INCREDIBLE stands.

You should start selling them!

the 4313B's normally hangout in my office horizontally. It was nice to have them home for a bit on top of the stands!

Keep in mind that the horns are an absolute nightmare to remove. If the damage is tolerable, leave it alone. Seriously... Sometimes they take pieces of the baffle with them and at that point you've shot yourself in the foot. Mine work, I haven't touched them, and never plan to. Tried once with the 4425s but after messing about for an hour I put the screws back in and called it good. If you do successfully get them off without destroying anything else, let me know how you did it.

Looking good though. Wonder when I'll get around to even hearing mine... Had them for 7 months and only checked horn function. :D

they may sound better with a little more ass behind them. I origanly tried my 300's with an fisher x202 (17 wpc) or so and it sounded like total crap. stepped up to 30 watt pre side and it improved dramatically

I was thinking the same thing.

We shall see!

These monitors are not really designed for floor standing but more for soffit mounting. Although some heavy lifting, try them up about 6-12 inches off the floor with damping on the floor on some type of appropriate stand with horn mouth roughly at ear level. Adjust controls for desirable balance, you might find a better sound in the speaker themselves before resorting to changing amps.

But I do agree with checking out the diaphragms and electrical contact points, especially the crossovers and biamp switch, a known weak point.

My horns came off no problem. There was nothing to it on my 4430s.

I'm thinking JBL had a larger amp in mind. I wish we were closer. BTW, regarding the EQ, I have the 4435's and my preamp has no treble or bass controls and I don't hear any reason to want them. The 4430's have JBL 2235s for woofers the 4435's used the 2234's. They appear to be the right family according the pictures. If they were 2234's in 4430's it would be odd, since 2234's are so rare. My guess is that 2234's in 4430 enclosures would be bass shy, just my guess.

Ditto; me too (both 4430s and 4435s).

Set properly, the horns should be pretty flat through 16 KHz (scroll down to page 4). Mine show up lovely on test gear. Since my hearing rolls off around 14 KHz that is plenty of treble for me.

My 4430 bass is tight and solid. I suspect you may be getting some bad room interactions with the woofers. (I get that in my bedroom with the little Andy Jones Pioneers; horribly boomy until I plugged the ports.)
