My JBL 4435 Frankensteins

Nyjblbob

Hooked on Horn's and Tubes. Go big or go home
Hey all,
What to do with just the tops of damaged 4435 Monitors.
I want to make Super Tower 4432-E2's.
It's Been a while since I've started a Build and thread.
I'm looking for those Current and former Pro sound guys Opinion
especially on
My choice in drivers ,
Cabinets, X-overs, and system design.
I have an almost mint pair of Electro voice 8 Ohm SP 15's, From 30 yrs ago,
when I was going to load them in my K-Horns.,
But went with Altec's instead.
and I am having a pair of EV SP 12's Re-coned, as 16 Ohms
I will attach the Pics of the SP 12's
And just to compare I have an Altec 515b next to the sp 12 Practically Identical motors and even 3" VC's
According to the spec's I found the sp15's are 103 db efficient, and the sp12's are 102 db
My Goal is to use parts I already cherry picked to make Super Efficient JBL's Thin Towers,
So that some JBL horns, can compete "And Fit"on the Flea/Low power amp Wall,
next to the Altec 604's, and Crites Cornscala D's
My main play system at the moment is Either my Audio Research SP3a, or Modded Fisher 400 pre amps.
With Fairchild 260 Mono's around 22 Watts Triode, or a Custom 300b amp 7 Watts.
All Tube for those not into Vintage gear.
I'm first going to crudely use the 4435 X-overs with the specially designed circuit to smooth out the horns curve
clearly to 17k. I can't hear past 13k anyway.
But I don't want 90 efficiency as the 4430's have, or the 93 db rating of the 4430's I have. But NOT with 7 Watts:no:
To me the 4435's have Just incredible Bass! but I don't want to have to use 400 watts to get it!
I want 100db's, :yikes:
My plan is to use some ESS AMT Monitor Cabinets I've had for Too long,
with the Sp12's and the Stock Re-foamed ESS 12" Passive 's.
And repurpose a nice pair of 6 cu ft Color Craft Cabs for the SP15's. Sealed?
I was told that the SP15's work great in tightly sealed and Stuffed cabinets, OR, Ported??:dunno:
Should I just use the 4435' Xovers for the horns and just biamp the woofers? And I don't want have to tri-amp
But I really love the 100 hz lower woofer in addition to the full Range,
that would be the SP12's from it's natural Roll-off up to 1200 hz.
And Fix a Big problem of the 4435,'s and 4430's. The Lower Midrange Fall-out!
those heavy coned 15"JBL's don't really do well above 7-800.
Surely not strong enough for male Vocals, and screaming guitars, with LOW power!
How can I use the X-overs, and NOT Loose efficiency???

Do you have a JBL 5234A or 5235. Make the xover cards for the 4430/35 and bi-amp them. This will make it much easier to use a different variety of woofers. Use a SS amp with high DF for bottom

Yeah Powerman,
I have a 5232 with 800 cards
And 5234 w 550 cards
As well as
A Crown Vfx tuneable
A Furman Tx4 tuneable
A Ashly Xr4000 tuneable
And a Dbx driveRack with the calibrated Mike
I was just looking for the easy way out
I have never seen the correct cards
For the 4430/35 systems I don’t even remember seeing them on the Jbl parts list

You can make the cards. What is needed is 2 - 18db cards as the 4430/35 cards are unique. These use only 4 caps and 4 resistors. Info can be found online by typing in 5234A or 5235 manual. It shows the values needed and location of the components to be installed on the cards.

Thanks Powerman,
the manual shows the correct 18db slope cards for the 4430/35's as part # 52-5130.
Building a pair from blank cards, is No doubt above my pay Grade level.

I've been listening to 2344 horns with 2426 drivers above a 2202 and those sitting on a 6 cu ft cabinet with a 2226. All trimped with an Ashly Protea 4.24 DSP crossover at 200hz and 1400 hz. Its a little under powered at 60 watts for the lows, 30 for the mid and 30 for the highs but it gets way past loud enough to annoy the townhouse neighbors. If you're going for something off the rez go all the way.

I'm still going forward with My High Efficiency, All Alnico, Use what I have, Narrow Tower project.
I love these Non Horn sounding 2344;'s that have a much bigger sweet spot than the short Horn/Lenses
in my 4343's and 3 way EN5 cabs.
I'll Probably use the Passive 4435 Xovers just on the horns, and Biamp
the woofers, Unless I can separate the Low Pass Woofer section:dunno:
Any feedback at all on the EV sp12's and 15's? I have plenty of JBL 14's and 15's
I have never used EV woof's, just a few horn mids and tweeters.
