Picked up a Model 90 KEF center the other week to pair with my 103/4s - but the 90 uses the smaller NT19 tweeter versus the NT25 in the 103/4. I didn't notice how huge of a size difference there was till I took the tweeter out for new ferrofluid - and saw how much crappier the NT19 construction was (no silk dome, much smaller diameter, tiny voice coil, etc)
So given that the center channel does the heavy lifting on the vocal track - I knew having this puny tweeter would drive me nuts.
Kept an eye open for the Model 100 (which uses the bigger NT25) on ebay, and they've been hitting the high $90 mark - sometimes more, depending on condition. For every Model 100 you see on ebay/craigslist - you can find ten Model 90s.
Yesterday, while surfing craigslist for KEF gear, I found a listing 'kef speakers!!!' - for $250. She had a Model 100 and the surround 70S - in their original boxes - and wanted $250 obo. She admitted that she didn't really know what they're worth -and found them in their family storage and wanted to sell.
After accepting my offer of $60 (tried to be reasonably fair - she had people sniffing around the other speakers she had pulled out - so I didn't want to miss out) - I drove across town to take a look.
Not only was the unit in it's original box - it was still in it's original plastic wrap - it had never been used. It still had the 1994 Loudspeaker award sticker on the speaker grill. This thing is *mint* - the binding posts are nearly mirror finish.
Popped the NT25 out and the ferrofluid was actually in very good condition, compared to the NT19 and NT25's I've worked on thus far. Cleaned it out none the less and gave it a fresh application and put her back together.
What a great speaker!
