My Krell preamp has no headphone jack. Advice needed.

Do you have analog or digital outputs on your '4K player'

Sony UBP-X700 4K. It only has coax, HDMI out. The Krell preamp does not have HDMI in.

Therein lies the problem - post #11 corresponds to what Krell outlines in the OM. Tape outs are only live with analog sources.

I play a movie on my 4K player that is connected to the preamp. Audio comes through my speakers just fine.

How are you connecting the Sony to the Krell?

Copied from the manual:
"The tape output functions only with analog sources."

There's absolutely no reason why you shouldn't be able to get a signal out of the tape outputs and send that to the headphone amp.

I emailed the Krell sales team & very quickly got a response
He said absolutely it should work with Tape Out.
He will get back to me with instructions when he checks with this buddies.

Walter from Krell sales called me again & said Tape Out does not work with headphones.
He talked to one of the designers, who said more circuits are needed in the preamp to run the audio to Tape Out. Those extra circuits degrade the audio.
He said to use L/R splitter cables to the RCA outputs.

I tried splitter cables & they work !
swechsler and Sam08861 had the correct solution.

The Krell preamp gain ( volume) level works with the headphones.
I set the gain on my Schitt headphone amp , then I can adjust the volume as needed on the preamp with the Krell remote.

He said Krell is reorganizing their tech support. They saw a problem and are making changes.

I asked Walter if it would be better to use the XLR outs instead of a splitter.
Will see what he says.

I just purchased a Krell showcase. I go from my pc - hdmi video out into a hdmi converter (powered - I also had to select on my 'open sound settings' hdmi output to direct the sound through the hdmi cable to the converter box) which has outputs for red, blue, green picture - which I do not use, but I do use the coaxial output and put this into the krell digital audio input number 1 on the bottom right, next to the rs-232 connection, then I use

this type of a connector on the analog audio output - L/R just to the left of the where the power cord connection is. I have to select 'stereo' on the front and change the volume from "00" to like 18, but the music plays great. Different headphones sound very different on this showcase - I found the one that had the most punch and bass was an old pair (of all the ones I tried) Koss SP-3xc, which reviews said are horrible, but they sound nice to me. Hope this helps.

Hello everyone, this is my first post on Audio Karma.
Sorry, I've seen posts/ problems like this, but I still can't find a solution.
I just got a used Krell Showcase preamp.
It does not have a headphone jack. I want to use headphones with this Krell preamp.

The Krell preamp has L-R Tape out and L-R VCR out RCA jacks.
These are the only Audio out analog jacks the preamp has.
I connected the 2 Tape Out jacks on the preamp to my headphone amp's L-R inputs.

I play a movie on my 4K player that is connected to the preamp. Audio comes through my speakers just fine.
However, there is no audio passed to my headphones.
I click on the tape monitor button, still no headphone audio.
I tried the VCR Out jacks as well. Still no sound.

I called & emailed Krell tech support. They don't respond.
The Krell manual is vague and does not mention how to use headphones.

Hi Dave,
Send it to me (together with your amp, which is hopefully also a Krell), and I will send you a "cherished" Sony receiver from the early 1990s with just such a jack and many connections for great gear.

Old dead thread, but for anyone stumbling in here, Krell $$$$$$$ gear and Best Buy cables?? ????? And a vote for a killer affordable headphone amp is Bravo Audio Ocean.
