My Less Than $200 Speaker System

I recently bought a pair of Dayton Audio Classic B40 bookshelf speakers that I pair with a Rockville 8 inch subwoofer. Together they cost about $180, and they sound great to me. Peace and goodwill. Did any of you come up with new speakers for cheap that you really like?

I built a pair of speakers in some Celestion Ditton 110 cabinets. I think that the overall price was about $200 or so. Super easy to do. And I did it right. Those speakers are in my main system now...

The two way lit came from Willy's Hifi in England and I got it off of the Bay...

I picked up a pair of Dayton Audio B652 Airs a while ago. I'd been impressed with Heil AMTs before and hoped to be similarly impressed by the Daytons. I wasn't.

I have been recently impressed with a setup I subbed into my living room TV system to verify functionality.

I just plopped down a pair of JBL N26 IIs on top of a pair of JBL PSW‐1200 powered subwoofers. I used speaker level connections from amp to the subs and from the subs to the speakers and set the crossovers at 90 hz.

I've tried similar setups before using the preamp RCA connections and didn't like it nearly as well. These JBLs aren't particularly new or noteworthy, but they've exceeded expectations in this setup. The whole shebang certainly cost more than $200 new, but I paid less than $200.

Glad you're liking your Daytons. I'm not sure how I overlooked them when shopping for speakers (just online, sadly) a few months ago--I've always had a fondness for acoustic suspension designs.

My less than $200 speaker system ended up being a $199 pair of Cambridge Audio SX-50's, no subwoofer, that I bought in March. I noticed that you use a Sony STR-DH770 receiver, and I paired my SX-50's with a $200 Sony STR-DH190, purchased at the same time, plus a $249 LP120XUSB turntable I bought last Christmas, to make a nice, low-cost bedroom system. I'm getting lots of enjoyment from these bottom-end components!

Curiosity finally drove me to buy a pair of the B40's you mentioned. After just 15 hours they might not be fully broken in, but they're already a fun speaker to listen to! As an apartment dweller who doesn't want to disturb the neighbors with too much bass energy, the B40's "limitations" in that area are a great fit for me. Very satisfying sound in my small bedroom with no need to ride the bass control when music or movie soundtracks get a bit rambunctious down there. I agree with Dayton Audio that "the B40 bookshelf speakers provide a balanced sound for smaller spaces."
