My Mailbox is full of ants.

Hi,

This is really weird, just wanted to share that there are about 5000 ants crawling all over my gas bill right now. They are the little guys, but there are also lots of eggs, and they don't appear to want to move them. They are really going crazy in there. It was fine when I got the mail yesterday, and then today, ant NYC in my mailbox. They sure are a lot happier to get my bills than I am. This is really creeping me out, and I don't really want to kill 5000 ants, as that will leave the mailbox full of dead ants, also not an appealing situation. I need someone that is like a pied piper of ants, an ant whisperer if you will, to relocate this thriving new community. The neighbor's mailbox seems just as appealing as mine.

I will let you know if anything develops. I am glad the box is at the end of the driveway.

Thanks
Erin

I have been battling them off and on for the last few years at my house.

This stuff works well:

I guess I could leave it next to the mailbox, but it's trash day here and the garbage guys would probably take it

Stop storing brown sugar and honey in your mailbox!

Seriously, just soak the bottom of the post with kerosene or Diesel. It will last about 2 months in fair weather. (don't use gasoline for obvious reasons). for the ones already in there, just use a computer duster spray can and blow them out, and they'll go on about their business elsewhere and won't come up the post again while it smells like petroleum.

I brought in the envelope with the phone bill, brushed the ants off it in the yard. Thirty seconds later, ants are crawling out of the envelope, so I threw it out the door. It is sitting on the porch, along with the water bill... more ants are crawling out of the envelope as I type. It is a little freaky.

Kill the queen, Erin!

Place ant baits at the bottom of the post at the ant trail. The busy little workers will take the bait back to the nest and eventually it kills the queen. It can take up to a week, but the baits work.

Good luck!

+1 You have to kill the Queen! No Queen no colony. Just like Bees.

I use an outdoor ant repellant/killer that comes in an orange shaker bag. I think it might be made by Terro - I get it at ACE hardware or Lowe's. Sprinkle it around your mailbox and house, and you won't see ants again for quite a while.

That's a very clever solution! Quite brilliant! :thmbsp:

I don't know about every community, but in the state of NC, if you get caught putting kerosene or diesel fuel out, they'll fine you. I think that the fine for the first incident here, is $500.

The Terro ant baits that were recommended earlier in this thread by several members work like a top. The liquid baits are a mixture of borax and sugar water. Sugar ants (the tiny black ones) cannot resist it. They eat their fill, and carry a residue of borax infused sugar back to their hills which they spread around the colony. Borax is toxic to ants, but it takes a little while to kill them which is why it's perfect for this sort of problem. They live just long enough to make it back to the queen.

If you use the Terro, in a couple of days you won't see a single ant around your mailbox.

hell this is a mailbox,at the bottom of your driveway did you say?are you somehow attached or wanting to protect them?i would say get your mail and then get your garden hose..and normally this might not be my approach, but in a mailbox?..rinse and repeat until clear..try the pesticides if you see em coming back, but i doubt that they would

Sticky cards in the mailbox and tanglefoot
or some other long lasting sticky crap on the post.
Will glue them down for disposal
and keep them from climbing the post.
