My McIntosh plan

WireHouse

gear nut
Hello Everyone,

After some long thought and plentiful research without any guidence this is my Mcplan. I would love the Forum's input or further suggestions.

MC501 x3
MC252 x2
xr27 L/C/R
WS350 x4 side and rear surround
MX136 pre amp/processor

so the obvious is each 501 will be paired with an xr27, and each 252 will drive each pair of surround. I am quite limited for space, as this room is only a 3 year temp untill I build a different room. with that said 3 years from now I may be onto somthing entirely different. I am forced to go in-wall for the rear channels (wife.....). and I will be mounting the xr27's ON wall with the center below the 106" screen. My subwoofer currently is a paradigm servo 15. I will use this for now. I have yet to pick a projector as I will have no money left over to buy one hehe :tears:

My theatre room is currently at electrical stage, and expected to be complete and operating for May15th 08. I have done all the wiring on my own, my choice of wire was Liberty Ultraflex 12awg THX. I have ran 3 pairs to all 7 speaker locations. projector has the choice of digital serial rg6 or HDMI v1.3

Thankyou for reading, and again any suggestions or advice is much apreiciated.

Nice start. Two suggestions:

Make sure you have plenty of outlets/current.

Make sure you have plenty of reinforced wood behind your mounting location for the XR27's to the wall.

It sounds like you have a very nice system planned. I just got an XR27 for my center channel, driven by an MC501, and it is a very nice speaker. I think you will be very well pleased with the XR27/MC501's.

Thankyou,

yes, I have broke out of the main panel with a 75 amp sub panel, just for the theatre room. each 501 will have its own 15 amp service, and in addition the front of the room will have 3 more 15 amp outlets. I hope to one day have the 1.2kw and those babys can draw 12amps on their own. I do have the option to change any of these curcits to 20 amp as we used 12awg lumex in the walls. And just for fun I ran a 8-3 wire over incase i ever need 220 service.

its the wiring and elcetrical that is a snap for me, its the pressure to not screw up a 75K room that I am having troubles with.

Nice plan. I have a similiar amp set-up and the same surrounds. I think the WS350s make excellent surrounds. They do a much better job than the CS350s that I was using. They just blend so much better and produce a more diffuse soundfield. My only complaint is that I have too many amps. With five amps on stands, it eats a lot of the space at the front of the room. I am currently using an acoustically transparent screen.

too many amps....hehe is that even possible? I am battling this issue right now, I am trying to find that perfact blend between displaying them so the wow factor is high, but at the same time I dont want the front of my room to look like the vegas strip. I am planning on concealing them and using 3 mid atlantic UQFP-2 cooling fans with a thermal sensor to monitor the heat. the idea is when watching a film, the entire front will be blacked out.

At one time I too had an acoustically transparent screen. I was hung up on the sound coming from behind the screen.

When I finally listened to my Video engineer and went with what he recommended, I was amazed at the improvement.

Masterlu,

you are obviously saying that you would rather your CC not go behind your screen? because I have ponderd this aswell, I am limited for space so if I was able to mount my CC behind the screen this would be a giant bonus for me. however if I have to sacrifce fidelity.....I dont really want to go this route. was it your sound, or your picture that improved? or both?

Big Fat Yes, both Audio & Video was improved 10 fold! :thmbsp:

Here is a thought for you WH,

Considering you are already planning on an upgrade to a bigger room in 3 years, how about just going with a 5.1 system for now. Get 5 XR27 speakers now. Then when you upgrade to your bigger room, you can get 2 bigger speakers for the front L&R and then you will have 4 matched XR27 speakers for your side and rear surround.

Just a thought.

I would love to do that, its just not in the cards for this build. when I re-do the system in a few years I will be into somthing along the line of XRT1K for fronts, use the matching center, so I will be one XR27 short for the side and rear ch. and one 501 short to run them. From there I will be looking at three MC1.2k for the L/C/R and a new hydro service to the house :thmbsp:

a great suggestion thought !!

Are you considering upgrading in the future to a VP1000/AP1000 combination to replace the MX136? If so, you might want to consider getting the VP1000 and a used or new old stock MX135 now, since, unfortunately, it looks like the AP1000 may not be out by your May 15th target start-up date.

I have the MX135 and just got the VP1000, and they work seamlessly together, providing the same functionality as the MX136 plus video processing/upconversion and the ability to just upgrade to the AP1000 when it arrives. An MX135 in excellent condition is probably less than half of the list price of the MX136.

Obviously, if you're not thinking about going to an AP1000/VP1000 combo eventually, then the MX136 is an excellent choice.

in all honesty, I may just wait for a while anyways. its so much to think about. I dont want to purchase a 136 to get rid in a few months I have a ....Denon AVR5308ci that I would be selling, just for the plain and simple fact that I dont want a Denon in my Mac room...(a bit snobby I know). But with every other piece Mac, why have the heart and brains of the system not.

so yea, I think I would go that route (ap1000/vp1000) eventually, so my may 15th date is just to have the system working, maybe around sept. this year I will make the processing plunge. maybe a MDLP1 round then aswell. there goes that 75K:nono:

I know you would like to have everything done by May 15th, but waiting just a little longer for the AP1000/VP1000 would be well rewarded.

Why is the VP1000 needed?

IF the BD-player is outputting 1080P full motion and the native resolution of the display is 1080P, why is a video processor (scaler) important? (just curious)
