My new Fisher Allegro

Even though I'm an electrician and fairly handy with a soldering iron, I think I will have to send this out to be done. Does anyone know somebody in the southeast Mich area?

Slow down. You don't need to send it out for someone else to replace the caps. It's not that hard, just intimidating the first time. Step back and let it soak in for a while. Try to trace out the circuit and draw a schematic or find a schematic. Look it over and try to make a little sense of it. Shop around for some caps of the same value and think about how you will change them out. Get yourself a solder sucker. It makes this so much easier. Just go slow and think about what you are doing.

Unless you have loads of discretionary income, then ignore the above and send 'er out. My motivation for working on my own stuff is $$$.
 
I have no animosity to The Brown Truck Company. I would, and do, use them all the time. Besides, I need the compost (joking).
That's a hard job. I had a part-timer in college unloading the big trucks. Hard work. You've gotta remember, they're the carriers working to meet a price point and still eek out a profit. Packing is key. Do it right and everything's good to go. They don't discern between a box o'tubes and a box o'nails.

That being said, you can probably do this yourself. If you know it works, set it up on the bench and make sure it works. Then unplug and replace one recommended component at a time, testing it again. It'll take a while though.

Actually, after I made that post I sat down and started taking a good hard look at both units and have come to the conclusion that I could do this myself, with some pointers as to what to replace.:scratch2: I admit that I'm a complete novice at electronics repair, and the terminology that goes with it. Put simply, I know what a resistor is and looks like but when it comes to capacitors and which ones stay and which ones go then I get lost. I'm going to try and locate a service manual or schematic and go from there. Any help from the folks here would be very much appreciated. As for the loads of discretionary income, I started laughing so hard that I couldn't catch my breath and almost passed out.:D

I agree with you completely, they dont have an easy job. To them a package is a package, its all about how well its packed. Although I wonder if your driver looked like Jim Carey in the opening scene of Ace Ventura Pet Detective:D
 
The caps you'll want to replace first are the electrolytic caps - the polarized ones (+ and - on them) in the power supply. Then the coupling caps between the tubes. Then any other electrolytics that are still in there.

When you are ready - and have a schematic - then post for help. You will get it.
