My new Sansui G-9000 with a weak channel - How to fix

SX-950SX-980

Hi Ive just bought my very first Sansui receiver, a G-9000. Ive always had pioneer units, Sx-950 up to Sx-1250. But now the G-9000 has impressed me. There is a problem, which I need some help with. The left channel has slightly less output then the right. Is this dirty relays? The previous owners stated the pots have been cleaned. Any ideas?

Clean the pots again, along with ALL the push switches, and Rotary's. I always tear down and clean pots and switches, even when the P.O. says they were done recently. I want to make absolutely sure they aren't a part of the problem, while troubleshooting. A lot of these older units need more than one cleaning to get the most out of them. And use De-Oxit D-5 and Faderlube F-5. They soften up the Sulfates (what is causing the problems on/in the pots and switches) so they can be removed. Haven't found anything else short of opening up the pot and scrapeing the wiper and tracks to remove the deposits.

This will rule out the connections as the problem when cleaned up (if they aren't the problem).

Don't forget to clean the switch on the side of the unit.

Try switching it back and forth about 20 times and see if it works any better.
You will have to remove the little plastic keeper.

Thanks for the advise. A new problem has just developed. The right channel this time will drop out totally. I then have to switch the unit off and weight 20 seconds then switch on again and presto its back, but then after a whileit goes again. Is this a switch/pot issue too?

Hi in Australia we only have access to the 3 Deoxit products. I cant get the one you talk about, are any of these ok, which are from the following website?

http://www.jaycar.com.au/productResults.asp?keywords=deoxit&keyform=KEYWORD&SUBMIT.x=6&SUBMIT.y=9

DEOXIT PROGOLD CONTACT CLEANER & REJUVENATOR - PEN STYLE

DEOXIT PROGOLD CONTACT CLEANER & REJUVENATOR - AEROSOL

DEOXIT CONTACT CLEANER & REJUVENATOR - SOLUTION KIT

All these produts simply cleans and washes away dirt, grime, and dust from your expensive equipment but are often ineffective at cleaning tough oxidation and metal sulfide contamination. This product will not only clean, but it will drastically improve equipment performance.

Sounds like a relay or dirty controls. Did you operate the connected/separated switch on the side of the receiver a few times to see if that would clear up the problem?

They look like kits. The aerosol kit has the two most used products, D5 and Pro Gold.

Is this G-9000 an Australian model? Can you post a picture of the back panel? I'd like to see the specification block.

My unit is an imported USA unit, all stock standard.
It looks like I wont be able 2 get Faderlube F-5. Ill just use the D5 and pro gold and see how things work out. Hopefully they will be ok.
Ill search the forum and see if there are any tricks to cleaning the unit.

Deoxit and Sansui G-9000

After pulling the face plate off the unit and then dropping down all pots, switches and toggles boards I then cleaned them all. In Australia we have limited access to Deoxit. I used a little kit containing two 14g aerosol cans of Deoxit. The first was Deoxit DN5 to clean then Deoxit gold Gn5 to lubricate. The results after many hours is that all channels provide the same output. Thanks to those who provided me with guidance.

This post is ancient but just wanting to reiterate the importance of a multiple cleaning with this gen. of Sansui products......they oxidize and get dirty faster than the average receiver. (It's not a big deal and worth the love.)
This G-9000 will be a very rare to find piece in a very few number years....they are slowly getting spread across the globe away from the the original "big markets" (US,Europe and Japan).
