I live on the treasure coast, as I've said before it's an FM wasteland. Used to have great stations we could get from Palm Beach like WSHE but that was many moons ago.

Yeah, I have come to the conclusion that you like certain FM stations, most can be streamed and some of them are pretty good sounding HD (whatever the hell that is.) I stream a classic station out of my alma mater in Kent Ohio..

I've come to the conclusion "we all" like certain radio stations, so what's your point?

Just not a fan of Clear Cannel, their 40 song format consisting of Journey, Hotel California, Stevie Knicks, and Stairway to Heaven over and over again gets a bit old after 40 yrs.

The only stations we have around here worth a ..... are the NPR stations.

As for streaming radio, not going to happen. I like using my tuners, if not I'll pop in a tape or spin an aluminum or vinyl disc, I have no desire to listen to music through my computer.

agree regarding computer....I use bluetooth off an I Phone direct to my receiver or a set of powered speakers.

I'm not sure about Japan but, IIRC in Europe the FM band is on even frequency numbers ie: 100.2 - 100.4 etc.

FM moving toward extinction. Norway now all digital and only a matter of time when all stations convert. FM stations now selling for a fraction of price 10 years ago. So, FM discussions will become academic in the future. And, DAB will improve the quality as time goes by. When you can stream most stations worldwide, why would you want to be limited to a device that is limited to local reception ability?

This is exactly why I continue to keep a tuner (Accuphase T-101) in my system. The Jazz station I listen to the most (WRTI) is local and also available via the internet. After listening to both signals it's easy to hear that the FM broadcast sounds a lot better than the internet feed. The two other local college stations also sound better over the air.

DAB I can't comment on. None of my gear receives it.

musichal.......you must either have been a writer of some sorts or an English major. I confess that I do enjoy some of your more lengthy posts. You seem to have a knack for writing a good short story. Enjoy your new tuner!

Thanks, I've enjoyed writing since I was very young. If you haven't visited AK's forum, the Reading Room, in the Subscriber Section not far from Barter Town, I have two threads, one with poetry and one with stories. A few folks seem to enjoy some of them. Simply titled musichal's poetry and musichal's stories.

Well, the little F-connector screw-on-to-push-on adaptor arrived today (actually a pack of ten). I had set the T-S500 in the system with the cheesy, thin, straight-wire, comes-with antenna attached and all stations were noisy, as I expected. Connected the simple dipole I cobbled from 3/8" copper tubing, which I use in the vertical orientation, and now everything comes in clean with no background noise.

Having tried rabbit ears, folded dipoles, and lengths of twin-lead previously - which improved reception but with some noise still on most stations, I have to say that I am delighted to have found a simple solution with the thick copper tubing. The antenna is almost five feet long, standing on end behind the tall cabinet, out of sight. Two lengths of 28.75" tubing tunes the antenna for 98Mhz. Middle of the band, near enough.

The Yamaha tuner looks good with the A-S500 integrated amp, and works via the amp's remote. Yay. The amp I had found was black, so they match. Haven't had a tuner match an integrated since, well, maybe about 1979 (Pioneer). Yeah, I think that is correct, although I may have had an NAD pair in the 80s when a lot of gear was going in and out of the house regularly. Anyway, it looks nice, sounds great, and I only have about $360 total in the two pieces, driving the Klipsch Fortes.

So the modest, modern Yamaha tuner does the job quite well. Glad to have picked it up cheap via Amazon Warehouse. And now you know the rest of the story.
